Short water pump VS long water pump?
So when is a long water pump used and when is a short? Silly questions I'm sure but my BBC didn't come with accessories and I don't know what bling to outfit it with.
Thanks Dan |

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
I have the short pump and have 4 inches from the tip of the pump shaft to the face of a 4 core radiator, about 6 inches to the front belt on a double pulley. You might could use a long pump, but things would be crowded inside the shroud, and you would definitely need your bolts to be no longer than necessary. I have electric fans, and there is a lot more room.

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
You buy an engine complete with all the brackets would be one reason. Those P/S A/C alt brackets are expensive. The long pump brackets are easier to find.

The long water pump setup also started in 73 for the trucks. Ditto on what John said.

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
I used a long pump on my 396 because I wanted to tuck the alt & power steering pump in toward the motor tighter. No radiator clearance problems.

wouldn't this make the alt and power pump farther from the motor?

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
Actually by using the long water pump the alternator and power steering pumps are closer to the water pump and crankshaft pulley thereby using a shorter belt on both.

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
I ended up with a long cause I had all the brackets and stuff already, then over time ended up with all the March stuff. If I were to do it all at once again, I would have went short and all March acc. or even a electric pump to give me more room for my fans.

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
I have a 72 truck and due to material on hand have installed a 350 engine with a long water pump. Now I cannot find a lower radiatior hose to fit it. I cannot go back and istall a short pump due to using an aluminum procomp timing cover that is so thick that the short pump will not seat.
Can anyone help me with a manufacturer and part number for a hose that works? Thanks |

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
41GMC- is the hose to long to fit or is the angle on the waterpump outlet wrong? I would try trimming a stock one to fit if possible.
My 72 truck has a short pump on it and the motor in it came from a 78 chevy c-10 with a long pump. My issue is that you cant get to the timing mark with a timing light. With the long pump on it you checked the timing between the pump and the timing chain cover. Now the short pump sits against the cover and I have no way to check the timing. I just set it by ear now. Anyone else have this issue?

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
I had a long water pump on my '72 C-20 with a 350, pretty sure it was original.

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
I stand by what I said, all 67-72 trucks used short setups from the factory. If any truck has long pump stuff on it, it has been converted in the past.

You can do it but it will be a tight fit.

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
Mines Not a Tight fit its got a 2" spacer on the water pump to bring the fan closer to the radiator and its still got enough room to fit another 1" spacer and the power steering Pump and Alternator don't have a tight fit I really think this truck was a factory Long pump or at least the engine cause its all in there with plenty of space

Re: Short water pump VS long water pump?
The stock hose for a short pump is all wrong in angle due to difference in pump inlet location.

Actually the short pump is wrong in both bend angles and lengths.
