anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
I have two 5lug rear ends, one is a 3.07 and other is a 3.73. truck has a 292 and 3speed. I was curious if anyone is running higher gears with their 6 cyl inliners and if they liked or did not. thanks

i think with the torque of a 292 3.07's would be great. if your not doing a lot of heavy towing in hilly areas

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
I tried 3.08's with my 250 and I really didn't like it- and don't recommend it for 250's especially if you actually work the truck. However, if your 292 isn't tired and worn, it may work ok with the extra cubes and torque. I think it actually might the more I think about it, as long as you aren't working the truck all the time.
I had to use alot more clutch with my 250 and just hope you don't get stuck in traffic on a hill!

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
Cars have 3.07s and trucks have 3.08s.They are tall far pulling off with a 3spd,which is the problem.A lower 1st will be desired. If you have a torquey 292 then it will be better. But,I just never liked the 1st gear in a 3spd for anything. The only truck I kept a 3spd in was a shortbed`68 with a 396.It rolled right out of the hole with that high 1st.I would have put a 4spd car trans in,but wanted it kept original.

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
i had a 250 with 3.73's, i agree with the other guys, 3.73's good for off the line and around town, but on the highway not so good, i have 28" tires (not huge) and felt like the motor was topping out at like 65 mph. something to think about if you do a lot of highway driving or want to go 80.

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
I ran a 292 in my truck for a good while with the 3.08 gear. The 292 pulled it just fine without complaint. The 350 in it now doesn't pull much better as a matter of fact. Don't underestimate the 292's torque.

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
I have a granny 4-spd with 292. I am thinking of installing a caddy rearend, disk brake with large 5-bolt pattern (like the half-tons) & correct width. The gear ratio is 2.32. How do you think this combo will work...granny is very low for the 4.11 rear now in the truck but seems like the 2.32 take-off should work...what are your thoughts?

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
The 82 I had was a 250 with T350 and 2.75 rear. Off the line not great, but as a daily runner, in town and freeway, it held its own. Just don't expect it to pull a house off the line or go much above 70 on anthing other than flatland. BTW, it did not help MPG with it being that high a gear either.

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
that trans still has 4th gear as the same as a 3 speed, 1:1 ratio so only adding a granny gear

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
Your truck would probably be "weak" from the time you shift to 3rd until about 60mph when the rpms get back to 16-1700. Assuming a 29 inch tire. 2.32 is too high for a truck with large tires and weighs 3500-4000 lbs. That's my opinion.

Re: anyone running 6cy and 3.07 gears?
yes thats what i,am saying. with the 3.08 r&p gear it is had to pull out loaded so if you have the super low 1st. gear in the sm465 then all should be good right ?
