Question What bench seat will give me more room?

I need to get a new seat , but I do not like the feel of the stock seat in my 71.
Is there a bench seat out of another year model or another make Ford/Dodge that will give more leg room. I'm 6'6" 260lbs and the stock seat is a little tight for my liking.

Thanks,
Zac

Scott.
I looked at your build pics and your seat does look like it will give a little more room. Thanks for the help

Zac, you might also want to look in the faq, and try the steering column shortening trick. I haven't done it myself, but have thought about it. Here's the link

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

i always wondered if you could build in a custom seat where the gas tank was - in other words, the seat back would be lower and would "flush-out" with the sheet metal below the rear window. I don't think it would be too low, and would still give plenty of padding space, and would give TONS of legroom...

I guess I'll have to change my name to not so big mike71, because I'm only 6-4 250.

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

i found that removing the tracks on the bottom of the seat, and setting it on the floor works well. i'm 6'3" 260 and have no complaints.

Just got done putting about 300 miles on her today, and have not aches to complain about.

my 2 cents

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

Well I am only 6-0" and 205lbs but still need a bit more leg room. I have a bad back and my knees kill me if they are in a crampted position for to long. I have done the column shortening and that is a big help for your arms being very comfy while driving but my knees still get it. I have put several thousand miles in the last few months and it has gotten to be too much. My tank is already in the frame so I am to looking for a new seat.

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

The 73-87 seats are about 3 inches lower than ours. The later models have a raised floor so the mounts are shorter. I'm only 5'10 so it didn't work for me My wife is 5'even and she couldn't see over the dash. But for a tall guy it may be perfect.

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

I'm running a 73-87 bench on my stock 72 tracks. It's a good bit lower. I'm 6'4" and 240 pounds. Fine for me.

How hard was it to switch out the tracks from the older seat to the newer one?

I ask because I have the stock '69 bench and its too tall and stiff for my liking. I have a decent shape bench from a '73-'87 and it a bit too low for my shorty wife. I was hoping the tracks from the '69 seat would give a nice happy medium between the two heights.

Thanks.

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

I took the back seat of an 86 crew cab. The front is almost identical but the back seat is tiltable. (excuse the unfinished truck.)

I didn't use the mounting brackets that came with, I used the bottom brackets from my old seat. I did have to drill a hole to bolt it to the seat. I also had to form the back bracket.

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

Lower huh? I went the other way. I grabbed a pair of buckets out of a Plymouth Voyager mini van that sit a few inches taller, and they gave me all of the legroom I need. I'm 6'3", but only weigh 180lbs. The steering wheel is kinda close to the legs now, with no tilt, and my head is kinda close to the roof, but I'm comfy as can be. The only thing I really do not like is that they are high back buckets, and the headrest is almost to the top of the rear window. Looks a little odd from behind, but comfort rates higher for me.

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

I am a long legged 6'1". I went to Home Depot, and bought a piece of 1" square tubing, and made spacers for my stock seat 1969. MAN did it make nice difference. It raised the seat 1", and made a very nice change

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

Since our stock seats are so thick I think if your looking for leg room I would look for a thinner seat but I wonder how comfortable they would be bottom cushion on your tail bone. If your having gut interferance tilt would be they way to gain room.

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

I had a seat out of a 77 Chevy truck in my old 69. It sat lower. It also sat at the sheet metal under the back window. I also used the original tank. It was easier getting in and out of the truck.

I was gonna ask the same question cause I'm 6'3" 285lbs, I'm a big boy. And I want to fit in the truck comfortably, I was also thinking about getting some corbeau seats.

Re: What bench seat will give me more room?

I have read on here that a 2nd row seat out of a Classic 2000-06 suburban or Tahoe works well. Now that The new bodys are out has anyone tried the newer 2nd row seats(07-08)?
