Did 68's have serial numbers stamped into the frame? If they did where is the number?

If I want to swap a frame, does it decrease the value of the truck if I am doing an original restoration. All other numbers will match, just the frame will be different.

There is 2 places where the # are stamped. One is on the top of the frame rail under the cab and the other is is close to where the arrow is pointing.

I have seen a few 67-68's that never had the one by the arrow.

im not sure about 67/8's but its really hard to see the stamping sometimes with a thin layer of surface rust on it... on my 71 i swear i had to use a wire brush for like 10 mins to make out the numbers

Jack, you sure that's the VIN? I know on the one ton and longhorn frames, that's where the frame part number is.

I am not possitive, But I thought it was the vin. I will check when it gets light tomorrow. Those are the only #'s I noticed on the frame but I will look better now.

OK I couldn't wait. Longhorn man is right they are not vin #'s. They are "upside down". I did find some #'s where the arrow shows but it was to dark to see them well. More then likly the vin.

If they ever reach the status of other collectible cars, I think you will find that matching numbers on everything is extremely important.

Personally I don't think these trucks will get to the Camaro/Chevelle/Corvette, etc. status, but is it worth the chance?

yeah, whos gonna know anyway. ive never checked a frame for numbers on a truck i was buying. not saying you should cover anything up, but it wouldnt be an issue IMO

i know i,am gonna do a c-notch and i got a different frame to modify ( c-notch & cut cross member for exhaust pass thru ) this way i can put the truck back stock and still have original frame with matching numbers.

My 68' was stamped on the frame, but on the top of the frame drivers side under the cab. There are other numbers ??? stamped on the sides of the frame about the same location.

Sure it will decrease the value on a truck that would otherwise be worth good money for being original.Makes it illegal(technically),too.AND,these trucks are every bit as collectible as any muscle car.Just not bringing the same money.But,a well optioned or rarer truck in the right condition can be worth 10X what it did new.

Lets put this in perspective. If you were looking at a totally restored SS/RS Camaro that everything was #'s matching but the subframe would it hurt the value? No, not at all.

The reality is that some day a #'s matching truck might make a difference, but it doesn't mean much in today's market.

If there is a way to identify the frame with the vin, and those numbers don't match, then you have an almost numbers matching vehicle. The numbers do matter.

Thanks for all of the input.

The truck is a 68 swb cst 396 with factory tach, fleetside wood floor, and buddy buckets with the spid to prove it. It also has the original numbers matching engine and trans. Only problem is the frame was bent when the guy bought the truck, so it has to be changed. It was a truck I posted about buying a week or so ago. I really want the truck and it comes with a frame that has already been totally rebuilt. I just want to invest in restoring a good truck. As long as I have the SPID, I think the truck should still be worth the resto, right?

Which frame side is it? If its the side thats not stamped - you could just swap the rails.

Thats the type of truck that is worth trying to keep as original as possible, but a straight nonoriginal frame might be more valuable than a banged up original frame.

Have you checked to see if it could be straightened yet? -- that would be the best outcome

In this case it doesn't seem to matter. Unless you plan to straighten the original frame you have to change it out.

Until Bloomington adds a category for trucks, a properly restored truck with a fresh frame is still going to retain it's value.

That`s a tough one.Although some think a vehicle has to be a car or at the extreme high end of value that becomes an investor`s market more than a collector`s,a truck like that is truly a collector`s item and a true truck collector(yes,they exist and have for years)would not want the numbers off in such a major component.It becomes a reconstructed truck.It will still bring high dollar (in the truck world),but certainly reduce the number of interested parties and the price as with any reconstructed vehicle.I wouldn`t let it stop me,just make sure you buy it right.
I hate to see rarer vehicles wrecked and believe in doing whatever it takes to bring it back.I`m comparing apples to apples,not apples to oranges.

That is a truck worth putting all the effort into. I would really look at having the frame straightened at a GOOD frame shop. The frames are really low strength steel and very flexibile. It would be well worth putting a $1000 into that frame to get it right...it is possible.

honestlly its a frame if it hasnt been mangled up and the truck has a good title and drives straight nobody would really question it and if its hard to see with everything on it how many people would look at the frame and know what the numbers meant

Yes, it is worth more if the title, frame & vin tag #s match. Especially on a top end model. You run into problems when you try to sell it on Ebay, auctions, reputible dealers, and many out-of-state deals.
Unless it is inspected, re-vined and re-titled legally you can't get it into states like CA, WA, etc---legally.
If it is just an average run around home truck---who cares. If it is a really nice expensive truck...think about how you are going to do it. Some day you may regret it.
