Looking at buying an 1986 Blazer
I am looking at buying a 1986 Chevy Blazer 4 x 4 that I am told had the engine and tranny rebuilt about 10,000 miles ago (no paper work though). Is there some way I can tell or are there any things I should check for on these to make sure it's all good. It has a 350 engine with either a TH350 or TH400 tranny (he's not sure).
Thanks!

Re: Looking at buying an 1986 Blazer
Just some general things , are - how clean is it if you hose off the top layer of dust? an engine with 10k should be pretty clean, although if it has been sitting any length, it will be dusty. If it is handy to pull 1 valvecover, that would give you a little bit of an idea too -- it shouldnt have any sludge in it --- the performance should be good (maybe not fast, but consistent)
A TH350 trans has a suare pan with one corner cut off -- while a TH 400 trans pan is kind of like a kidney shape-- but definitely not square |

Cool thanks! I take it the TH400 is a better trans?

The TH400 is a better trans, but it was never factory installed in a blazer with a small block. Only way you'd have one of those is if it was swapped in.

What about the 700r4 (i know it's a 4 speed), did they come stock in any years?

Re: Looking at buying an 1986 Blazer
700r4's arent bad, but can be a little sensitive to larger tires if not gear correctly and beefed up accordingly. 700r4's started coming in the mid 80's. I can't remember the exact year, but again all you got to do is look at the shape of the pan.
It's possible that the 86 did have a 700 at one time and got swapped with a th350 or th400 due to the 700 failing. Look at the pan.
