Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

It is getting close to D Day for my 70cst. I plan on taking the truck to the body shop about the first week of Dec. The factory 402 along with the tranny will be completely gone through along with everything else. When the time comes I will hand it down to 70cstjr. Although the GearVendor unit is expensive...it is my understanding these are bullet proof. Who has these units on their trucks and what has been your experience with this unit? Also anyone know who has the best price on these units? Thanks in advance.

I have also heard they are bullet proof, I figure if it's good enough for Stacey David's Copperhead truck, then it's gotta be a good if not great product.

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

GearVendors right here in my own town. Mine installed by manufacturer. Bullet-proof and worth every penny. Hauling up a grade you will never want to go back. Amazingly small unit and very simple to use. Mine is on my 95 F250, and another will go on the 72 GMC soon.

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

I heard great things about them, and the above posts agree with me as well. And like stated above, if Stacey David would put one on Copperhead, then it must be bullet proof. I would definitely consider one if I thought I could afford it.

I'd like to get one of these in the near future. It would make highway cruising much more enjoyable. Guess I should start saving some money...so many projects, so little money

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

The vast majority of GV units go underneath motorhomes. Those gasser pigs need lots of help going up and down the hills of America. They are near indestructable.

Now, about Stacy David using one underneath Copperhead......I'd bet my right nut that the price was "too good to pass up" for the TV publicity he gave them. Something tells me that one of us normal schmucks will have to shell out the dough for ours though, unlike him.

(Tx Firefighter;2459194]Something tells me that one of us normal schmucks will have to shell out the dough for ours though, unlike him.) Good Point...I am hoping that through this board something might pop and I will be able to get a better price than list. I am looking at this as a long term investment.

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

I would think with the reviews on them they would be an outstandingpiece. If I was building a truck with funding for whatever I thought was best,it would be a TH400 with a GV over a built 700R4.Since it is rated at enough torque and HP to handle towing and performance I believe it would be the better choice.

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

Ok guys here is a fella that will give a bit of a discount to people that are looking for a Gear Vendors overdrive. He has a hot rod shop in Lampasas Texas. I have no idea what he can do for you. Junkyard John and I both purchased from him awhile back. He's an honest good guy.

You can contact him via Email at kikinstreetrods@att.net Make it attention to Brant. Also make sure you tell him CG from the HAMB and 67-72 chevytrucks is the one that sent you. You can also call him at 512-564-1934. Go to the GV site first and figure out what you want so you can let him know. Dont make him do all the work for you.

Once again, I dont know what kind of money he can save you. Its still gonna be expensive with a discount. Well expensive to me, I know some board members have deeper pockets than others. Heck if a bunch of people want to buy maybe he can do better.

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

I have an older one in my 68 with a TH400. It is the best. As far as being pricey, everyone is right on the money. I bought mine on flea bay and still lost half a buttcheek to my wife on the price. It is a great peice though, well worth the money. I like the ability to tow in overdrive and not cooking the trans, like the fate of my 700r4.
GVs customer service is the best too. They even had record of my piece by serial number.

They are definitely businessmen, I was going to put my unit behind a stout TH350, but it required a different adapter for it. They wanted my TH400 adapter and some money (core charge?) for a TH 350 adapter, so I just built a TH400.

I have even considered one for my Trans Am, but I like my other buttcheek.
If you have the duckketts, it is the way to go.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

These are rated for heavy hauling in a light truck(1t and under)and will live happily under one of these pickups.Alot of trailer toting diesel truck owners use them.I`ve seen them installed in trucks with o/d trannies for untra overdrive. You can split gears with these.I want one for my M22-equipt shortbed. They`re hard to find used, though. Most guys carry them over to the next truck.I know I`m setting my d-shaft aside and having another made up for the GV so I can swap it out if I sell the truck. They are either o/d or u/d depending on which way you mount them, not both. They`re salty, but not when you figure you won`t be rebuilding it like an electronic o/d tranny. And,most automatic o/d trans aren`t supposed to haul in o/d until the recent ones.

I'd love to have one, but concentrating on getting back on the road. I don't have any more kinfolks who will leave me any $$ when they die, so I guess I'll just keep on helping our economy continue to grow.....

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

I did a quick Google search looking for problems and I only found one guy. He has a Dodge, Cummins truck. According to him the aux trans won't handle the Cummins. and he mentioned some reverse problem where he had to lock up 4 wheel drive. Anyways he said he is on his 5th unit now. Personally I think the GV is just ashamed to be hooked to a Dodge. Anyone running these had any problems? If it does blow up are replacement parts available? Or do you just have to buy new?

With the cost of a new Gear Vendor, why would you be on your FIFTH UNIT?! Obviously he is doing something wrong. You would have thought he would have learned a lot sooner. My guess is he is either full of it or it boils down to operator error.

Re: Gear Vendor Over/Under drives...what's your take?

I have looked at used but one is taking a gamble with missing parts and adapters which could run into a lot more $$$...plus there would be no warranty.

Guys usually want too much for used when I rarely see one. That Cummins guy must be a dork.Prolly thinks his truck is some Horsepower God,like alot of those guys. There`s alot more Cummins Dodges with GVs than him. He`s prolly hotrodding through the gears splitting them.Or some other abuse. It`s just gears for cryin`out loud.

Considering they use em for drag racing and land speed racing you have to know they are very stout.

I put a TH400 and a GV on my 72 about two years ago and its the best. I have a 3:73 rear and it pulls 2300 rpms at 70 mph. When I get to the woods I turn it off and go to 4wd. No problems.
