Thanksgiving Truck Pic

I planned to take more pictures today. But,only got one.Once I got inside with the rest of the folks I only got back outside to play frisbee by the river with all the kids. That`s the South Fork of the Shenendoah River (see it down there?) with Massanutten Mtn in the background.Had a great time and hope all else did, too.

Re: Thanksgiving Truck Pic

Heading south on 340,pass over Compton Creek, top of hill and over tracks make right on Ford Island Rd,follow to river upstream(that`s south y`all). That`s just past the ford in the river. That`s where it is.Page Valley is a beautiful place. It`s the little Shenendoah Valley.
Bill,it`s all familiar to you,I`m sure.

Our Thanksgiving was last month and it is good thing. We have a fair amoun of snow right now and below freezing temps. I would love to spend some time in Maryland, perhaps on our way home from TN next year.

Re: Thanksgiving Truck Pic

Thanks for the compliments on the picture and the appreciation of the land.Shennendoah Country is truly one of our country`s treasures. This is Virginia and you can follow these hills south as far as you want to go.These are the Blue Ridges Mtns. For the high road you can take Skyline Drive from Front Royal, then when that ends pick up the Blue Ridge Parkway down into Georgia. In the Smokie Mtns there are many grat drives,as other members (SeeTen) have shown. There are great drives through the valleys as well.
I could go on all day about great drives in the east. One you get out of Metropolis,it`s still God`s Country from Maine to Florida. Not to leave the rest of our great nation out.I want to see whatever I`ve missed before it`s all over...in classic iron.

If anyone wants to take a ride in this area,c`mon.I`m an hour+ from Front Royal.Heading west in Maryland,it just gets better. My mom`s family is in the western tip of the state.I-68 is a beautiful interstate to the Ohio Valley or I-79 south. But "ole 40" is even better for a ride across MD.

I live about 5 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway. I've got the Blue Ridge Mountains on one side of me and the Appalachian Mountains on the other. God's County for sure. Just makes for rough travelin' in the winter.

I might have passed through that area on the way to AL last month. Does I-81 go through there? Very pretty country, best view for my 1,000 mile trip...

Re: Thanksgiving Truck Pic

Bill,lucky dawg.
Mike, sort of.You were in the big valley with Massanutten to your left and the North Fork of the Shennendoh.I real nice break from I-81 is to hit US11.It is the old road along 81.You would have passed by Woodstock,Mt.Jackson,New Market, all in that area across the mountain. You were in apple country.I`ve been meaning to give a call, while you`re down there.
Jim,nice road, huh? My mom`s from Friendsville and lives there along the Yough River. The farm`s up on the hill over town, west of the river and to your right...Old Morgantown Rd.

You know most of these old roads are old indian trails.Friendsville was a summer residence for a Shawnee tribe that gave John Friend (my ancestor) a piece to settle. He chose a location away from the river to leave them their farm land.He took a squaw for his wife, too. It was a peaceful settlement where one benefited from the other.Lots of nearly lost history there. There`s actually a museum/library in town, now. It`s run by the Friend Family Asscociation and my mom ran it for years up until my dad got bad off.I try to get all I can out of her.I wish she`d write a book. She`s an excellent writer.

give me a ring anytime...numbers still the same. I went to Moultrie (spelling?) last week with another board member and had a good time. Talked to Tim Christian for a second but he was busy selling his goods....

After I passed through VA my ride to AL was pretty boring as far as country views....

Yeah Mike, did you head get off I-81 east of the mountains or west. The route numbers escape me,I-85 to the east through NC?It`s always better on the 2-lanes.I was impressed with the hills of northern Alabama into TN.I never knew Birmingham was in the hills.
