Exhaust leak?
When my engine is running, there is a kind of popping/clicking sound that gets more rapid as the rpm's go up, exhaust leak? Valves out of adjustment?

Re: Exhaust leak?
Could be either one. Do you have an automotive stethoscope?

Re: Exhaust leak?
Lifters will create a metallic clicking noise. Header leak will be a uniform popping noise that always sounds trhe same.

Re: Exhaust leak?
for exhaust leaks, i would use a piece of vac hose and listen around your manifolds. a stethoscope can be picked up at your local parts store real cheaply. valves when driving would sound more like a click and slight knocks where exhaust sounds like popping sounds. you also may be able to feel hot air. i would check your exhaust doughnuts

Re: Exhaust leak?
Chunk of hose works every time and you probably have a 5/8 chunk about 3 ft long collecting dust. If not buy a chunk as you will get two uses from it as you will need some for a PCV valve, pwr. brake vac. hose line etc. one day. Header leaks sound like a steady ticking sound different then valves. If your not sure go by a garage [ma & pa type] as any mechanic can tell you if it's a header leak or valve train noise that you are hearing.
If it's a header leak I use Permatec Ultre Copper .... cheaper then gaskets and works great. esll.

Re: Exhaust leak?
Check your manifolds. I just went thru a set of crummy gaskets on my headers and had the same sound. If I can give my $.02, spend a few extra bucks on good gaskets...you'll be happier in the long run.

Re: Exhaust leak?
Depending on the material, you can also double up on the gaskets as well. But I would agree with OrangeCrush, go with good gaskets and fasteners.

Re: Exhaust leak?
ive got an exhaust leak in my chevelle right now, its killing me, a leak will increase with rpms, but will go away or decrease when your foot is off the pedal. look for the notorious black soot around your header/manifold gaskets or collectors/donuts. the PO used the cheap paper gaskets and they always blow sooner or later, i want to step up to the copper gaskets with the locking fasteners soon, saves headaches like these down the road. good luck
