Electronic Rustproofing

Anyone tried or have comments on electronic rustpropfing. The kit costs around 300 and changes vehicles polarity and repells rust or it cant form.I just want to know if anyone has tried or if it works

Re: Electronic Rustproofing

Its been a while since I did high school chemistry but I'll take a shot. I think this is supposed to relate to electrical ions passing through a solution and creating a chemical reaction. This is why theres corrosion behind a ground strap on a vehicle after a few years - moisture works behind it and metallic ions get deposited, with the electrical current accelerating the process. To remove this it'd follow that if you reversed the polarity it should disappear.

From what I remember the 'residue' always appeared on the same electrode based on polarity. Since I can't remember which we'll say the (+) one. So in the circuit between a framerail and ground strap, the ground strap is (+) and the frame is (-), thereby the corrosion would form on the ground strap. If you reverse the polarity the frame rail is now (+) and the corrosion forms on it - in exactly the same spot.

Now even if there was something going on within that current to remove rust, wouldn't it only happen at the contact point between the frame and ground strap? Meaning that rust elsewhere on the car wouldn't be affected?

To put an example almost everyones seen imagine a corroded battery connection. Theres corrosion at the terminal, not covering the car.

I don't know enough to say it doesn't work but I'm a sceptic

Re: Electronic Rustproofing

This is the product I sell at work. Partsource (Canadian Tire).

http://www.counteractrust.com/

We've installed it in both my dads 91 Jimmy and my bros 86 Camaro, and we have noticed slowing down and even stopping of existing rust spots. Especially on my dads Jimmy!

Re: Electronic Rustproofing

If any of this stuff worked wouldn't you suppose that Ford/GM would have it on their vehicles?

No. GM and others only care about the short-term survival of ther automobiles. When it's about 10 or so years old, they don't give a sh*t.

I agree with Jim about car companies. (all companies for that matter) There's plenty of technology out there that could lengthen the lifespan of a car but car companies don't use it for two reasons: 1) cost 2) they want repeat business.

However, I'm skeptical about this electronic stuff.

with blue to agree with Jim. They only want their cars to last as long as the loan, then you can buy a new one

They are in bussiness to make money, we're the ones with passion for these vehicles. Their passion ends when the line is no longer profitable. On one hand ya cant blame them, its a bussiness, not a passion (like what we do here). Just my thoughts.

Of course -- They wouldn't be in business (given the market demands) if they were concerned about the vehicles they made/sold 10 +/- years ago.

it might work the gas company that i work for uses cathodes, anodes and rectifiers for corrosion on the pipelines.

Re: Electronic Rustproofing

The car companies do care, that is why they have been E-coating(electrically applied primer dip) the entire car for 10+ years now. While does not totally stop the rust it will slows most of it considerably and if the car is kept clean will prevent most rust from ever starting. I have a 10 yr old Chrysler cirrus with zero rust and has even had paint work done to it since new(not an all over paint, just wreck repairs which I nkow have comprimised the factory E-coat)
A lot of trucks I see on the road that(here, the home of rusty trucks) are around 10 yrs are pretty much rust free especially the ones that are well kept. The environment we put our vehicles thru everyday is brutal, and I think they are doing great in rust prevention technology.

I know cars are 3-5 times cost wise what they were in the 70's but they last 3-5 times as long. Most cars in the 70's you were doing great(so I have been told) if you got 70-80K out of them before a total rebuild,( the manufactors never planned on them being used past 100K anyway, check the speedos) now you get 250K or better EASY if you treat the car right.

Re: Electronic Rustproofing

It would be great if it did work...

Like some of you all mentioned, big car companies are in it for the short run. Most of us keep an automobile on average about 4-7 years. Some less and some longer so they don't see a need to rust proof them completely.

I would venture to say that very few of us bought these trucks new and kept them all this time.

Re: Electronic Rustproofing

I'm wondering if what he is referring to is Cathodic protection.

basically you attach a piece of softer metal (Anode) to the metal you want to preserve, and you can run an electrical current through it depending on the system. the rust and corrosion will attack the softer metal, and you just replace the anode when necessary.

the technology has been used on steel structures, piping systems, and ships for years...

I remember watching an episode of "Dirty Jobs" where mike replaced the anodes on a small dam in new orleans or something. Sounds like the same theory in these kits, or at least the first kit.

Re: Electronic Rustproofing

As already mentioned, cathodic protection is used on steel pipelines and, obviously, it works well. I used to work installing pipelines and I'm no expert but, I believe, it works because it draws a current away from the metal you are protecting. The cathode bags we used were automatically grounded because they were buried in the ground. In order for these automotive gizmos to work, it would stand to reason that they would have to have a ground other than the vehicle itself to draw the current away???

Re: Electronic Rustproofing

I'm not flaming anyone, but IMHO if the car companies were really interested in giving us a quality vehicle they would offer the frame & body in stainless steel. My Dad worked as a sheet metal man for 40 years and the only time retooling to work on stainless steel was when you only did one job. There are alot of different grades of Stainless out there and a few with qualities and nickle % high enough to bend like mild steel yet resist rust forever. So it can be done, and I know I would pay triple for a vehicle that would last a lifetime.
The cost would be higher, but not out of reach.
