Question Tailgate rebuild?

Since the after market tailgates seem to be so crappy, I was wondering if anybody has tried to rebuild an after market gate with parts from a damaged OE one?

Seems like I could use the ends from a stock one, use some steel stock to brace it up and 'skin' it with the sheet metal from an after market gate? I could get some strength and straight lines..What do ya think?

Re: Tailgate rebuild?

Seems like a saw a post some months back where one of the guys had gotten a crappy tailgate and decided to skin it and use it to fix his. Not sure who it was though.

Re: Tailgate rebuild?

A GOOD WAY TO STRENGTHEN it is to install that stainless steel cover all along the top edge. and make one to put along the bottom edge. for my work truck i was going to make the one for the bottom and have it come completely up the back side and wrap over the top like the stainless does but looks arnt as important as function to me on that truck. also the aftermarket gates with the letters stamped are stronger than no letter gates.bob
