What Camshaft are you running ?

I want to know what camshaft you guys are running or recommend ? It will be in a basically stock 350 with only a performer intake . I want something I can hear but what is too big . CompCams 270 ? Anyone running one of the Extreme Energy cams in that range ? Frank

i'm running a comp cams 270H Magnum

though i wouldnt recommend it for a mostly stock build. it isnt to wild, but more than a stock engine should use.

I have a Summit copy of the Edelbrock performer cam. It has a slight lope. My 350 is basically stock with headers and double hump heads.

I got the comp cams 270h.. but I got dart heads etc.. I have put this same came in stock motors and it performs well.. Its a good all around cam. I think its the biggest you can use with the stock converter.

I am running a XE-294. I love the cam. Too big for daily use. One thing with the XE cams, they make a lot of noise. Sounds like lifters are tapping.

Summit 1102 kit which is the same as the Edelbrock Performer, only much cheaper. Good cam for stock heads, stock valve springs and 8.5:1 compression. Has a slight lope at idle which is nice and it's very streetable.

Buddy of mine runs that cam in a stockish (intake/headers/duals) 350 in his '85 3/4 ton 4x4 with 35" tires, sm465 and 3.42 gears. It's got a little rumble at idle and has tons of torque. Good cam.

I have a comp cams 280h in a 350 10:1 compression and severly ported 461 heads.
It has a fair lowend and a awesome top end,and a great rumble at idle. but i wolud not put this cam in a stock engine

Appears as though I'm running the biggest single pattern cam. I'm running a Comp Magnum 292H. 244*/244*, .501"/.501" lift, 110 LSA, 106 ICL. It's a very big cam and very tricky to set and very touchy to maintain. It's not something for a stock engine, nor is it good for daily driving, mainly cuz vacuum is non existent. My brother is running the 270H Comp, distinct idle, works with stock converter and heads. Bout as big of a single pattern you want to go with. Lunati has the Voodoo Series out now that is an amazing dual profile cam, they are slightly more expensive, but they outperform others. With that one, I'd go with a 262 cam. I'm running a full profile circle track SB in mine. .120 domes, 400 heads, 2.02/1.60 stainless manleys put in. Full porting work, deshrouded valves, milled to a final compression of 10.85:1, lightened crank and rods, 292 cam, mech. lifters, single plane high rise intake, reworked 830cfm spreadbore holley. Scorpion alum bodied roller rockers, 1.47" springs, 10* locks, BBC oil pump. I'm a big of an engine builder.

The CC 260H is a great daily driver choice. That 1102 (which I'm betting IS a rebranded Edelbrock Performer cam) is a great truck cam - I'm planning a build with one right now after getting turned on to it in the DD thread

i have a blue racer cam 280 duration 488/510 lift in my 1974 daily driver with camel hump 461 heads(2.02/1.60) and 550 lift springs. it dynoed 310hp to the wheels with 298 ft/lb of torque

Thanks for the responses . The 1102 cam or the 270 sound like the way to go . I am going to research the performer style cam . I do want to hear it at idle . I have given thought to a pair of Dart iron heads etc. but I dont know if it is worth it since the truck is just a driver . Frank

You can never go wrong by letting it breathe. You can however go wrong by getting too big of an intake runner. A SB 350 that isn't going to see any more than 6500RPM on the street needs no bigger than a 175cc runners, don't fall for the "bigger is better" scheme, going bigger than that only kills low end torque and puts the power above the RPM level the engine will ever see. My suggestion, for a stock SB...find you a set of Vortec L31 heads, you'll like the 30 useable hp gain for $270/head. You will have to get a Vortec carbed intake for it though since it's a raised runner head.

The Summit kit is a really good value. It's a white box but don't let that fool you, it's from a major cam grinder. I want to say Melling, but I've never confirmed it. When I ordered the kit, they sent Sealed Power brand lifters. I went to Edelbrock's website and downloaded the manual for the Performer cam with the same specs, which gave me the recommended initial and total timing for the cam.

I have a Comp 280H with 1.6 rockers in a plain-jane dished-piston, 487X headed 383... It has a very distinct idle and has good performance, and with the low compression will run all day on 87 octane...

I've got a Comp (#12-422-8) Retro-roller in my 9.0:1 350sbc, with SR torquer heads. Havent had a chance to drive my truck as of yet due to the fact that its still a resto projet, but it has a very sweet rumble, to a slight lope to it which is based on the EX268. Hope this helps
