72 blazer w/ cummins

i haven't been on alot lately due to being busy and whatnot, but i thought i would share some cool stuff

last week a i started putting a early 90s 12 valve in a 72 blazer. eventually the bracketry might be offered in kit form, but so far the fitment is not causing terrible issues. sorry i don't have photos as my camera is down for the count as of right now. this rig will end up with a getrag five speed and a 205. it also has an 8 inch lift and some 40 inch military michelins. its a pretty cool rig and had a 454/465/205 in it to begin with. more to come as i progress.

its my bosses baby, and i told him that, and he knows it. for now its to get the thing back on the road. eventually he wants to get an auto behind it for easy cruising. he is very interested in making this a kit, so he wants to get it rolling.

we just put a 4bt in a cherokee xj, and it has no balls. their is either a boost leak that we haven't found, or its the engines lack of size. if i was to put a 4bt in anything, it would have to be modded, and it wouldn't go in anything bigger than a TJ. JMO

my camera still takes pictures but it will not import to my computer. for some reason it just stopped working. kinda makes me angry.

my plans have switched to 6bt for my K20 now because of this little project. it will make it much more usable for what i want to do with and i will get better mileage. +2 for me

A while back my camera stopped working with the usb cable that goes from the camera to the computer so I got one of those multi-card readers and find that works great. Something was wrong on the camera so the cable wasn't making a good connection. Maybe a card reader could help with your issue.

thats what my mom said too. she takes pictures for a living, so i figured there might be something to it. been a little chaotic here since the snow hit, so no real progress on the swap. dynamat and some paint for the frame but nothing of consequence. pictures to come in the future i promise. just as soon as we did ourselves out of the snowdrift

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

test fit the front clip today and there was huge amounts of rad. to fan clearance. this thing fits great considering what was supposed to go in the engine bay. i did have to section the front core support cross member, but that was easy and so far has been the only real issue. hopefully i will have pictures soon

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

I would love to see pictures of this install. I have been pondering getting rid of my 427 gasser and installing a Duramax in my '68. The 04 Duramax that I owned was one of the best trucks that I have owned.

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

finally got a few pictures. not alot, but it gives you an idea about fitment and whatnot.

some of the welds look a little boogery on the new x-member. i was "training" the new guy, and since this is the bosses rig and not a customers, we let him do some welding.

hope you all enjoy.

Looks good. The furthest valve cover back has me worried though. Is there enough clearence there to get it off?

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

all of the valve covers and the exaust manifold can be removed in the truck. that was a concern we made sure to accomodate. the engine is mounted low enough that the valve cover and bolt have plenty of room. this was also done to try to keep the weight as low and as far back as possible. we could have probably moved the engine forward at least .5" maybe .75" without being uncomfortably close to the rad. the x-member and the frame channels are adjutable for height and forward/backward movement.

the t-case plan has changed to an atlas. it appears there will have to be some floor plan mods for the blazer, but nothing extreme. the trucks wouldn't have the same problem.

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

also, i plan on swapping the 6bt into my 72 as well. when that happens, it will have less lift, but retain the D60 front. this will give us an opportunity to determine how much clearance as far as lift is required. the engine crossmember will be about 3/4" closer to the pan on the next version. i plan on running 4 inches of lift, hopefully the pan/x-member will allow for that and a front 60. if not a reformulation of the x-member will happen.

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

it has a mean look to it, but it is utterly useless. no flex, harsh ride, tall CoG... mine is lifted the same amount and i love the look, but for what i want out of it the lift must come back down to around 4 inches.

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

My question is how did you get the core support/radiator to fit with the 6BT? I used a 6AT in mine and the core support/radiator just fit and the engine is almost back to the firewall? I am running a pusher fan. The 6BT is longer than my 6AT...........Did you do any work on the firewall, looks like you did but I can't tell?

You want a piece of excitement, stuff a diesel in a 2 wheel drive...........Wouldn't have been a problem with anything other than a GM with its IFS Maybe some year I'll get the body work done on mine..........We ran the crap out of it two summers ago, this past summer I drove it acouple times, and she's been parked ever since. $3.65 Diesel doesn't make me want to run it.

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

everything just fit. the firewall got a little lovin with the ball peen, mostly to accomadate the removal of the exaust manifold. we really didn't have to do much. the core support and radiator are in stock position, and it is a 4 core rad. there is over an inch of clearance between the fan and the core. i did have to do some work to the front crosmember so it would fit without rubbing the harmonic balancer. we were originally going to fab a new one, but i like the look of things being stockish. to the untrained eye, the front x-member looks stock. we did mount the engine lower as that alowed us to move the engine back without bashing the firewall more. it all fits tightly, but it fits.

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

I have a 93 Cummins, that I wanted to put into a Suburban, 4X4 etc, etc. You know, everything that you get in a $40-50K vehicle for pennies on the dollar!! I am very interested in the kit, but I am also kinda ready to sell the Dodge as I have no time or $$. Too many projects never enough time or money!! Any idea on a cost for the kit if I decide to hang onto it?? Biodiesel is the way to go, i am ready to buy the set-up and start making my own diesel for .70 cents a gallon. Screw OPEC, I'll make it myself!!

Re: 72 blazer w/ cummins

not sure on the price of the kit right now, we need to finalize it so there is a good set of instructions, pictures, procedure and all that. we also need to get everything to fit so we can have a list of things that are required to make the thing fit. there is a certain cummins manifold that will be needed. there will be some do it yourself fab included i.e. the front x-member. i will talk with the boss as soon as i can and see what he thinks

my boss cooks his own diesel and he really likes it. its cool except for the fish stick smell.
