stock sterring column conversion for 54 gmc

Can anyone help me or tell me who makes the kit to take your stock column and make it so you can use it with a newer steering box. I think it is just a bearing that you put in the bottom of your stock shaft. i heard of the kit but have not been able to find any info anywhere. i would be great if someone knew or did one of these conversion that could give me info. by the way I am using a stock manual trands column from my 54 ad gmc. thanks

here is a link to "Classic Parts.com" conversion lower bearing, but the one I recieved was too big on the OD, & too small on the ID. I sent it back & had a teflon sleeve turned at a machine shop instead. Maybe youl have better luck than I

how did you connect the column shaft to a steering joint. did you have to mill the shaft, weld another shaft to the orignal. please let me know. I want to use my orignal coulmn so any info or pix would be great.

I cut the shaft to the length I wanted, reduced the diam. just a little on the last 1" (used a grinder) then ground opposite sides of the shaft flat to fit into a 3/4" double D Borgeson steering joint. It was not difficult to do, & didn't take long. You could weld a 3/4" double D shaft on the end, as an alternitive too.

If it is just a bearing try your local bearing shop. Probably find that their cheaper.
