Dual Exhaust on 6's
Hello,
Did not want to hijack 72GMC2500's thread, Anyone run the cast iron headers and dual exhaust on a 292? What mufflers? What is the tone?

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I haven`t,but I`d like to.I think duals on a six sounds smooth.Especially a 292 would be nice.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
If you go over to www.inlinersinternational.com there used to be some sound clips of different 6 exhaust combo's.There's nothing like the sound of a sixxer rapping off the pipes. Most of the time a larger displacement gives a throatier sound to the exhaust so the 292 should sound great.Muffler type/brand just depends on how loud you want it.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
Went to school with a guy who had duals on his '55 Chevy 235/stick. Ran a glasspack on one pipe and the other was straight-through.
Just wind it up and let off on the gas.....sweeeeeet!!!

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I had a jeep with the 258ci. I put on a header and split the exhaust right after the collector and put some generic turbo mufflers on it. It sounded AWESOME! I love the sound of a 6 with dual exhaust.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I LOVE the sound of a 6 through headers.
It sounds amazing at idle, pretty mean. kinda like something that'll come eat your kids. just be careful you don't bring it up too high in rev's (which isn't an issue since they don't like the high R's anyway), it starts to sound a bit like a chain saw. with that being said, i always wanted to put glasspacks on my 292 with headers, and run them out the side, which is pretty much what i did with my 307. but...pretty sure the ol' sixer sounded alot better. -Sam.

I put stovebolt cast headers on a 292 with Clifford intake ran 2,2 1/2" into a flow with 1,3" out right in front of the rear tire and it was AWSUM! Cruising wasnt bad had cab well insulated but when ya hit it just scared the pants off of bystanders

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
Suville,
You got just about what I want, I was thinking of running the pipes down the side of the cab and body like sidepipes, dumping in front of each wheel. I will put a chrome cover or screen over the pipes. Never see side pipes on a truck anymore. What Clifford Intake did you use? I sorta have my heart set on a triple Offy # 1454 progressive hookup.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I hear the Offy is better for lower end rpm and city type driving, and the Clifford is more effective at higher RPM's. Used the "special order" water heated manifold and I believe a Holly 390? dont remember. Did it for a customer, he was real happy!

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I got Clifford truck headers on mine(250) along with their intake..........I put both into one piece of 3" with a glass pack. Alot of people like the sound of it, but I personally find it just OK................We had the C-10 in my avatar setup with the stock intake/exhaust breathing out a piece of straight 2" all the way back the the front of the box, where it turned into 2.5" and was dumped out above the cab in the form of a stack(Piece of shallow well casing).........No muffler of any type. It was the neatest sounding truck I ever was around......It was a really low tone and was LOUD. Sitting in the box going up the road was the best, it almost sounded like it had a turbo spooling up under the hood when you took off and between shifts........I've been trying to copy the sound with my K-20, but can seem to do it, and I don't want a stack on it.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I like the old school look of the Offy intake, I was able to find more info on the web on the Offy products as well. The Clifford website did not have answers to all my questions.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I was told when I was looking for a intake to stay away from Cliffords...........Go with an Offy, I liked the beefy look of the clifford myself, so going against what I was told I went and bought a water heated clifford. Got a set of their truck headers used, and got a good used 1404 500 CFM edelbrock and dropped on it. I had some tuning issues at first, but I eventually figured it out and got it to the point it runs awesome. I get great power and good fuel mileage. I am glad I didn't go with an Offy now. I just bought a EFI kit for it from Howell that will bolt on my Clifford intake.........Can't wait to get it on to she what type of difference it will make. I have no problems with the carb, I just don't like having to play with a choke in the winter when its cold, and electric chokes don't impress me.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I know they're scarce as hen's teeth, and they won't fit (I think is the case) but the 230CID Pontiac OHC I had in my '67 Firebird Sprint had split mainfolds from the factory, along with a high-lift cam and a Q-Jet. It came from the factory with a Y-pipe from the manifolds (more like shorty headers) that fed into a single V-8 exhaust pipe, muffler and tailpipe. I had mine done with dual exhaust pipes feeding into baby turbo mufflers and then tailpipes that dumped at the back of the body like a Camaro with a V-8.
Alas, I miss the car and mourn the day I sold it....all because we have five kids who were starting to fight about who would get it when they started driving. Oh, none of them would get to drive it....they just didn't know.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I have a 292 in my '68 Stepside C/10. It's the original engine rebuilt 27 years later at .030-over. I have an Offy intake, Edelbrock 500 CFM, Clifford headers, dual pipes [1"-7/8, I think] thru turbo mufflers, exiting aft of rear tires. I have a crossover tube, on an angle, under the cab.
On the freeway at about 3000 rpm [with a Crane 260H cam] I hear a kinda "wildcat" snarl echoing off the retaining walls. Never taped it, I have my hands full under those conditions. BTW, Inliners' International is: www.inliners.org

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I had headers and duals with 14inch Turbo mufflers on a 250 in a 71 c10 in highschool. At idle it sounded pretty mean, fairly deep and throaty. At about 2000 to 2500 rpm the pitch immediately changed to what has been compared to a chainsaw on steroids or an airplane on takeoff. With the gearing it ran in the 2500 to 3000 rpm range on the highway. I needed a loud stereo to cover it up in the cab, but the hum of that engine was sure an attention getter.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
I apologize for my lack of computer savvy. I do have some jpegs of my 2002 thru 2005 292 engine build adventure, but posting them is too complicated for me. I'll ask one of my techie friends to help me out with this, but it'll have to wait -- I'm up to my elbows in replacing the starter on my '71 Jimmy. Involves pulling hedders on the 350 to get to the starter and solenoid. Intend to wrap hedders so the starter and solenoid won't cook off again. Maybe splice in external Fomoco-type solenoid on fender skirt. The project is snowballing rapidly.

Jeez, you shouldnt need to pull the header to get the starter off 68OrangeSunshine. I didn't need to anyway...

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
They're the Heddmans. Cheapest hedders I could find 9 years ago, when I installed a crate 350 in my '71 Jimmy 4x4. I had a starter wire burnout [too close to exhaust] back in '00. I wanted to put a Mr Gasket aluminum heat shield on the starter to prevent further trouble. I found the Heddmans were too close to the starter assembly for that gadget. I even had to loosen the passenger side pipes just to get to the starter. This time I'm pulling the hedders out completely to wrap hi-temp tape on them down to the collector. This should cool down the operating temps in my engine bay. [I live in Arizona.] But this V8 chatter isn;t germaine to the L6 thread. I may post my mini project under Engine & Driveline later, but I'm kinda busy just doing it for now. Also the battery box is corroded shot. Went to the junkyard today and got 2 usable bottom trays to weld onto the original supports for $10. I thought I was gonna have to buy a re-pop from LMC for $49.

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
Three questions for those in the know,
1) What diameter and thickness should a set of pipes be for the headers (considering building a set for s&g's) 2) thoughts on a set where all 6 primaries go into one say... 3" out? 3) This might be a shot in the dark - I have a '77 Datsun 280z, w/I6 and headers on it (future project), anyone think they'd be the right fit for my 250????

Re: Dual Exhaust on 6's
My old 250 with Hedman headers and turbos had a good sound to it. I don't have any sound clips.
I have this video of my dad's 53 with a 235, Clifford headers and stock intake, Monojet carb and Flowmaster mufflers. VIDEO
