I guess I dont have 'er fingered out.....
Remember this thread...
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=274078 Well got the motor mount fiasco under wraps, now the tranny is giving me troubles. The converter in particualr. I might have the flexplate on backwards too....I did a google search and they showed them being installed bothways, so I dont know. My problem is that my converter is so tight against the flexplate that I cant turn them seperatly. And I distincly remember setting the converter making sure to get both "clicks" assuring that its set right. But....but I decided to take two birds out with one stone and drop the motor and tranny at once, and I did some fanagling to get the tranny mated to the engine. Im wondering if when I did all the pushing, pulling, and lifting if the converter didnt slide out some. Also, Im not using the original converter that came out of it....Im running a Neil Chance ~2800 stall. And I know they didnt use my old one as a the core, so for all I know I might have the wrong converter. I dont know what to do....unbolting the tranny to slide it back isnt a problem, just a ****ing pain. Im also wondering if I were to just bolt them together like that, if when I get up the Rs and the flexplate holds up to its name and starts to flex, if it wont push that converter into the pump and mess things up. Any suggestions? Mitch-

i know it a pain but slide trans back and make sure the flywheel is on correct and the converter is seated properly if not you will have trans problems, i always keep the converter all the in till im ready to bolt it to the flywheel that way i know its in correctly

Re: I guess I dont have 'er fingered out.....
Is it "tabs" in or "tabs" out? All the other ones Ive built have been "tabs" out. And the original one I replaced was "Tabs" out. Now I think the "tabs" are whats haning me up.
"Tabs" out... ![]() "Tabs" in.... ![]()

Tabs out.Figure the bolting surface for the torque converter to flex-plate will have the same relationship to the crank mating surface either way.The torque converter will sit in the same location, front to back of vehicle,in relation to the motor and transmission. With tabs out you`re holding the converter off the flex-plate surface.
I don`t know all your details. But,I had a problem like this and it turned out that I had forgotten the motor I was installing had last been in a vehicle w/manual transmission and I never removed the pilot bushing from the end of the crank.

if you start it like this, you'll ruin the front pump.

Should have 1/8" to 3/16" of end-play between the converter and flexplate when the converter is all the way engaged into the trans. pump.

Re: I guess I dont have 'er fingered out.....
I don't think "click" is the right word but...
The converter has to go in in three stages. If you start it that way it will ruin the pump. You'll have to separate the motor and trans to make sure the conv is all the way in. I think the bolt face of the converter should be about 3/4" inside the bellhousing. |

Re: I guess I dont have 'er fingered out.....
Slammed70,... Replace the lower (2 on each side) trans-to-engine bolts with some that are about 4" or longer. Remove the upper bolts,... and slide the tranny back on the longer bolts. Then you can take a good look at what's going on. Rotate the converter while pushing toward the tranny. If that's all that's wrong you can easily line everything back up. If you have the flexplate on backwards,... it would probably be easier to drop the tranny.
