Project Black Ops
I have a 1971 Chevy C10 with a 402 CU. I decided to start a build thread on it to hope to keep me motivated on my project. I am calling it black ops for several reason one the truck is going to be pretty much completely blacked out. For 2 I live in military base housing and we really aren't suppose to undertake projects like this. It will take a while and is quite an undertaking considering 1 military pay and two a deployment either in spring to Japan and Korea or one in the fall back to Iraq. Here are some pictures of some of what I have done so far with installing some headers. More pictures of just the truck hopefully tomorrow when I get back home.

What headers did you use? I have a 402 BB 70. Nice truck btw.

I used the Flowtech's. They were pretty cheap and from what I read on the board you get what you pay for. They will work well for me for now.

Here are some new photos that I took today. I have removed all the molding off the truck. I had noticed that water must have gotten behind them and rotted out the metal and caused all the rust. I have several other pictures that shows in detail the rust, but you get the idea there is pleanty of rust I have to get rid of. There is a picture of the front driver side quaterpanel that I have done so far. With a lot to learn on body work I dont think it was bad for my first shot some more smoothing out and it will be good. There are several patch panels and such on there way for me to replace. There are a few spots on the cab that have some rust on it and I really dont know how to fix there isnt a hole through but there is like and 1/4 of inch worth of a divet in it. I dont know if anyone has seen it before and knows how to repair it. I thought of cleaning up the rust and use filler? Also any of you guys heard of a filler called metal2metal? I was wondering if it was worth the money. |

Today I was able to get out and work on the truck a little big, now that I am on leave and thanks to FEDEX. I ordered some rust bullet to get started on a driver side front panel. Here are some before and during pics more to follow when I finish later on tonight. Basically i got this panel from the PO he threw in a bunch of spare parts. I took a wire brush and removed all of the loose rust and cleaned it up a bit and I am adding 2 coats of the rust bullet. After that tomorrow I will be adding some black primer and start on the other side with just taking it to bare metal and fill in the molding holes and priming it.

Here is what the fender looks like tonight after the rust bullet dried for 24 hours and I primed it. Later on tonight I will be flipping it over and getting started on the other side to fill it and get ready to hang on the truck

Quick Update on the truck. I had went to Florida to visit my parents before the upcoming deployment while I was there I was finally able to register my truck. I had a hard time here in SC with it for whatever reason and they wanted over $300 for it. So I did it while I was in FL. So now I am trying to get the truck drivable to go and cruse in it for a while and the list gets longer seems the second I fix something something else goes wrong with it. I installed exhaust pipes that I never put back on after the header install because I need the flange welded to the pipes. Then I had a rear taillight out. Fixed it, then the battery died bad alternator. Replaced it and more electrical issues found a plug disconnected. Now there is a mysterious oil leak that comes and goes. There was also a leak on the oil pressure gauge line probably got hit when installing the headers, and know the line blew off spewing oil everywhere. That is where it stands now with no motivation to attempt on fixing it with the felling of something else going wrong with it.

Come on now if we all stopped then when a problem came up were would we be. This is why their part stores every were you look! Get off your but and get back to it. You probly spend more time figuring out why not to do it then it would have tacken to fix it!

Well I took some advice on my thread and stop making excuses and keep on working on the truck i fixed up the leaks and everything I had that was going wrong. Adjust the carb finally to what it should be running at and everything is running. I was going to take it for a ride tonight but some stuff has come up. My project is going to slow way down to a grinding halt here in March as I am leaving to Japan and several other countries in the far east for the next 6 months. I get it running just in time to leave it sit

I went out today and did some work on the truck and I finally got it timed and running like it should *fingers crossed*. However I have no pedal pressure so no ride I decided to take the wheels off to see if I could find any leaks. Here are some pictures of the new project. As you can see the brakes are pretty well jacked up. The calipers are rusted really well, as so is the rotor. The rotor also has a scorch in it pretty deep. There are several other places that it is scorched pretty deep but not nearly as bad. The good news is it looks like they greased the bearings not to long ago. This will probably be my first project for when i get back from Japan as this weekend is the last one I am going to be here in the states before I leave. |

Unfortunatlly not latly I have been in Japan for the last 6 months, but I have so plans and boxes of parts at home for when I get back in a week. Hopefully the stars will align right and I will be able to keep it.
