Help on installing a fuel neck grommet please - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

hey guys, im getting frustrated now. With my problems with my front brakes-can be viewed here- http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=273349 Now i've run into more problems... I cant seem to get my fuel neck grommet on my 67'. I have one that says its for a 67' but it wont go in at all. i tried WD40 but that is doing nothing... help please?

I've always had the tank out when I put mine in then slid the tank neck into the installed grommet. Never had any problem doing it that way. Maybe they won't go in with the tank in place, not sure on that. Hopefully someone will chime in with some tips if they have installed one with the tank in place....

I didn't remove my tank, but loosened it at all the mounting points. Then I put white lithium grease on everthing. It wasn't easy, but I got it on.

Put it in a pan of boiling water for a few minutes, carry the pan right out to the truck and as soon as you pull it out of the water slip it on. You will need a good pair of gloves to insulate your hands, but it should go on with a little pushing. I just put a new one on a couple months ago and this is how I did it!

GB Watts' idea is a good one will have to remember it. I had trouble with mine, so I put in tank lubed the rubber and the cab with dish soap inside and outside and put the grommett on the tank and used a windshield stick to push the gasket on/around the filler hole. Take your time and this will work.

id say put it in boiling water like the guy said....spray soap or any other lube n the place your putting it and then just do what he said....i did that to mine even in hot climate..and it went on piece of cake

It is easiest with the tank out, but not impossible with it in. KY Jelly works well because it does not have chemicals or petroleum contents that can damage the paint. I use paint sticks to push the seal around the neck. If they slip, they won't do the damage of a screwdriver.

I have never tried this on a fuel filler neck but it works well on other rubber parts that can otherwise be difficult.....GOJO! Cool thing is it washes right off.
