Here is my problem (Early Classic Ent.)

Ok so i'm alittle pissed off! About a month ago I ordered a set of conversion axles for my 64 from Early Classic. They were out of stock and would have to be drop shipped from their supplier, ok no big deal. The guy told me it would take about a week for them to make and ship the axles, again no big deal. So I wait and after two weeks I still have no axles. At this point i'm getting pretty antsy to tear into my truck, so I call and the guy at Early Classic. He tells me that the company made the wrong axles and it would be another week before I saw the correct pair, Thanks for calling me and letting me know? Another 7 days go by and I finally got the axles delivered.

So as of yesterday I got my truck all set up, tore apart. It feels good to work on it again, I dont even care I smell like gear oil. Everything came aprt smoothly when I try to install my new axles they dont fit the splines on the spider gears. I got my old axles and the new axles side by side and my old axles have 17 thick splines and the new have 30 splines. WTF? I call Early Classic and tell them the problem and the guy says right away you must have a 63 or 64 rear end? Yes I have a 64 chevy with the stock rear end which they new when I made the order. Then he tells me we dont sell conversion axles for 63 or 64 rear ends only 65-69. WTF? Why wasn't this said when I told you I had a 64 when first making the order?

So this is where i'm at... What to do? They said they would refund my money, but I stiil need 5 lug on the rear of my truck to match the front. Do I find a 65-69 rearend and install the new axles? Do I find a wider 70-72 5 lug rearend and return the axles? Can I use the spider gears from a 65-69 rear with the correct spines in my 64 rear? HELP ME PLEASE!

I saw a complete conversion in C.P.P. that included a set of spider gears with the axles. With this in mind, I would think you could change the spider gears.

Yep - I have CPP axles; CPP's website states that you need the spider gear kit with that year differential - you're looking at another $100 + shipping:

64short, that's a pretty crappy deal. I have a 64 as well, and on mine the rear is a Dana 44. I'm planning on pulling it apart for a rebuild, which would include a limited slip (posi) diff at the same time. The link below is from Auburn's site:

If you look at the Dana 44 table, you'll see there were two options. One for 19 spline axles and one for 30. I'm not sure about the discrepancy between your 17 count and Auburn's 19. I still have to count mine.

Like Ryan says, CPP appears to have what you need here:

But of course, the website doesn't say how many splines are on the axles.

Anyway, I think this is definitely doable without swapping the whole rear end.

Sorry to hear about the miscommunication and delay on the truck. I have always had great luck with ECE... at least you know they will take care of your out-of-pocket expense. It seems like it's always something when we start digging into a classic truck!

Do as some of the others have recommended... purchase a set of spider gears and put it together! The original spider gears are probably ready to be refreshed anyways!

Keep us posted on the progress... your truck is definitely going to be a head turner!

Thanks guys for the input! I'll check out cpp's website. I also now where a 65 12 bolt rear is so we'll see..... It just sucks Early Classic employees dont all now this before selling this product. They should put out a memo! I wonder if I can get Early Classic to purchase the conversion from CPP for my troubles?

Nathan I was wondering if you started making the trailing arm crossmembers yet? How much for just that peice? I plan on gettin the kp 6-link but that crossmember would still need to be addressed to lay out!

I too have this issue but somehow I knew about it going in and asked ECE about it when I ordered the axles. I think the 17 spline units are relatively rare compared to the 30's so nobody bothers to make them. You should be able to switch over to 30 spline gears and be good to go. Or, you could just go with a 30 spline Eaton Posi unit...that's my plan. Parts are sitting in the garage...waiting for my 30 in-lb torque wrench to be calibrated so I can properly set pinion bearing pre-load and then it's all going back together. Wish me luck...first rear end build!

when i had my nova i ordered some sway bars from them. they didnt show up for a couple weeks. i called them and they said that there was some delay in production.

so i tell them to cancel my order for me.

1 week later they show up.

i call, they say " oh, someone didnt cancel your order, but i see you called to cancel it "

last time i'll order from them.

I know this is too late for you, but why not fill and drill your axles? remove the axles, have the 6 bolt holes filled with metal and welded, redrill with the 5X5 pattern?

This is a pretty common update when you have a rear end you really like and don't want to spend 100's on new axles.

That is exactly what I did about 10 yrs ago. It helps to have all of the equipment you need to do that at work at your disposal. Only cost me the $$'s for the new drums and 10 new studs...

Tony, your truck looks good. What size wheel/tire combo you got?
