Truck 4 speed to 200r4 swap Question..
1968 Chevy SWB 307, want to swap out original truck 4 speed for 200r4. I already have the tranny, converter, shifter, detent cable, dipstick+tube, wiring for lock-up and yoke for driveshaft. What kind of crossmember will I need, what kind of wiring will I need to do and are there any tricks or tips someone can give me? Thanks!!

Re: Truck 4 speed to 200r4 swap Question..
Easy as pie, just amke soure your have a kit for getting your lockup to work in OD as heat from slipping will kil these trannys quick... You should be able to use your existing cross member since you have a V8 truck allready... just have to move it back a bit to line up... also (cant remember if you said this allready) you will need an auto column or aftermarket floor shifter (lokar for example) and the right bracketry for the TV cable to mount up to your carb.. Bowtie Overdrives makes some nice stuff for this... I did this conversion on my 74 C10 and like it alot...

Re: Truck 4 speed to 200r4 swap Question..
Thanks for the help. I will check out that website, and I believe the tranny was already internally wired up correctly because the guy I bought it from had it in an older car. I do have a B&M shifter ready to go. I think I may need to get a crossmember though since this is a manual truck and doesn't have one, just the one that the bellhousing bolts too. And does anyone know if I need to remove that crossmember that the housing bolts too? Any other tips would be great. This board rocks!

Yep you're gonna need an auto crossmember to replace that manual one. You can probably find one pretty easily here on the board or locally from Craigslist or a scrapyard. You can also buy a new one from places like ECE, CPP or Brother's.
Be prepared 'cause taking out the stock crossmember can be a pain.... |

Bowtie Overdrives also sells a bolt in cross member, it's kind of cheesy though. If you can find a stock one go for it, the holes are already there

Re: Truck 4 speed to 200r4 swap Question..
Right on. I try to use original when ever I can. Do you know if the floor hump is the correct one to put in an auto? It's originally a truck 4 speed. Thanks

Re: Truck 4 speed to 200r4 swap Question..
Somebody else can chime in but I don't think the hump size matters much. The trans will fit regardless. Are you staying with a floor shift or a column shift with the auto?

Re: Truck 4 speed to 200r4 swap Question..
with the 4 speed you should have a high hump. correct me if i'm wrong but i believe that most autos had a small hump so there shouldn't be any kind of clearance issue there.

Re: Truck 4 speed to 200r4 swap Question..
Floor Shift. B&M Megashifter with a cable, so it will sit on top of hump with the cable run through the floor. I wasn't sure if the hump mattered or not. But I do believe I have the high hump after compairing to my other 68. (beauty of having 2 of the same trucks hehe. ) Thanks for all the help guys, few more weeks of gathering a few parts and then I will tackle it. I have heard of 700r and 200r's going out quickly if the wiring is wrong, so I will need to look at some diagrams and make sure I get it right the first time! Looking forward to that overdrive let me tell you.

Re: Truck 4 speed to 200r4 swap Question..
No, hump size shouldn't matter. The only thing that might be a problem is floor shifter location. Aren't the floor shifters towards the front of the cab on the 4 spds?
