Well me and my buddy are going to start tearing in to my truck today. I will try to take pictures, but you know how it is. Once that first bolt is out the race is one.

Yesterday we got the entire interior out and started on the front end. We probaly would have gotten a lot more done but while trying to find a engine hoist we stumbled into a local brewery and did the tour. Not to mention sampled some of his wares.

Sunday, we started out by removing the fenders and tore into the heater, engine, transmission, and transfer case. It was all pretty uneventful except for dropping the transfer case on the ground. What is the best way to get that thing out. While here is a couple more pictures. Al we have left is the rear bumber, brake lines rear running lights and wire. Hopefully we can get that done one night this week and get it to the body shop by ASAP.

Today I found out why some people take so long to finish a project. Once you start tearing into it, breaking thinks and looking at stuff at a different angle you start to see a ton of changes you want to make. Logically the time to make them is when it is apart. Hopefully I can contain myself and get through this with very few changes

I just bought a trans jack from Harbor Frt for a 100 bucks. Best money I ever spent, plus it will lift up to 800 lbs.



Try to stay away from the 'mite as well syndrome' it adds years to the project, don't ask how I know...J.

I have that same trans jack from harbor freight. For the price I have been very impressed. The only trouble I had was one of the castors gave out. The problem was I had an NV4500 strapped to it at the time and it nearly topled over! I have since bolted on a heavier set of castors and everything is fine. Just a word of warning, I wouldn't want that transfercase to fall off and smash an arm or something.

Thanks for the heads up, could you be alittle more specific. Did the axle come outa the wheel, or the caster became loose at the mount to the jack. Thank you

I’m going from memory here but I believe there were two “plates” that held ball bearings in place. Whatever held these together (a rivet I think?) came apart, the wheel went one way and the bearings went rolling on the ground. In other words the mount was still bolted to the jack and the wheel still had its axel intact, but the swivel joint (up and down axis) that allowed the wheel to turn around totally busted.

That jack stand would have been nice. I am going to make sure I get the frame from the body shop to put in all of the mechanicals before the body goes back on. It seems to make more sense. With that said, what is the best way of cleaning off the transmission, tranx case and engine to get ready for paint?
What are some of my options?

That is a very difficult question to answer. The process is easy, the disposal of the crap is hard. A screw driver and putty knife will get rid of the bulk of the big stuff, can be swept up and put in the trash (my landfill doesn't mind!) Yours may. Then gunk and high pressure wash, make sure all holes are sealed up, but you end up with alot of brown water, and that is the stuff that is enviromentally difficult to get rid of

Oven cleaner goes a long way in getting the gunk including paint off your hard parts. Spray it on, let it sit for a bit then pressure wash, be sure not to inhale or get it in your eyes. Nice progress.

Gotta agree, oven cleaner is good stuff. I also have found Castrol Super Clean is good once you get the heavy gunk off.

I have used oven cleaner in the past. Just keep away from parts you dont want to clean it will eat the paint. I you don't want the paint stripped don't use oven cleaner.

I did an engine block one time and the outside air spray a mist of oven cleaner on the hood of the truck not good for the paint of the truck that I did not want to strip.

Your blazer looks to be in good condition. What are you plans? A complete frame-off restoration or just a frame-off body paint?

Good luck on the project... whatever it is. The things you notice taking it apart pale in comparison to the things you notice putting it back together.
