Help with Torque Converter!
Ok, I'm a complete newbie. This is my first truck build. I have a 62 C10 stepside. I have replaced the rear main seal and oil pan gasket on my inline 6. I have the correct fly wheel installed. Now I have an engine, torque converter and 700r4 transmission. I know I need transmission fluid in the torque converter, but how much? Do I install the torque converter to the transmission first or to the flywheel? All help is appreciated.

Here is a web site to help you out. Put the converter in the tranny first and keep spinning the converter clockwise, with a little bit of pressure on the converter, until it seats all the way into the tranny.

Then, once the converter is indexed into the pump, mount the tranny to the engine. Then bring the converter forward until it meets the ring gear. One thing I learned the hard way was that the bolts used to hold the converter to the ring gear can bottom out on the converter (if the converter is the style where the holes are tapped and no nuts are used). The bolts I used looked short enough, but they bottomed out and as a result, the ring gear was never firmly clamped to the converter. Led to a horrible vibration which took a long time to sort out.
Once you're ready for fluid, fill up the tranny, then start the engine (which will then fill the converter and cooler). Oh, by the way, make sure your cooler and lines are clear. Don't want old crap ending up in the 700. Once you're looking good on fluid, block the wheels and put it in drive at idle. Then keep checking the fluid level (needs to be level ground). Make sure you get a funnel, because these things take a lot of ATF to fill. Good luck.

Acually you can also jack up the rear and put stands under the axle and let the wheels turn. It makes the whole tranny turn and you get the watch the wheels spin..
