charging system questions
i know this is the wrong forum but the electrical forum doesnt get very many people looking at it, and i dont think i seen the answer to the ? that i have. i have a 67 burb that the po changed over to an internal reg. alternator and an h.e.i. distributor. the first ? that i have is the problem that i am having is, is that it shows that the alternator is not charging. up untill about a week and a half ago it would charge fine, now it is not charging at all. the battery seems to be good, the alternator is good and showed that it was charging at autozone when i personally took the alternator in and tested it, but i still changed it to a better one. the other ? that i have is that when i upgraded the alt. i got a 105amp alt. and it has 3 wires that come out were their was originally 2 wires coming out and i dont know exactly what wires go where. their is a red wire(about 10gauge), and a brown and a black wire(about 14gauge) plus the batt. wire on the back of the alt. thanks in adv. this place unlike the other forum that i frequently go on, (for my jetta) --->www.vwvortex.com.<---- they suck and are all sh!+ talkers that are better than every body else. and are haters but anyways like i said thanks.

Re: charging system questions
Ok went and looked. My red 10 gauge wire is hooked to the positive on the alternator. The smaller red wire 14 gauge is also hooked to the positive on the alternator and is in position one on the plug. The black wire that I have is alos a 14 gauge in the position two on the plug and is wired to the factory dark blue wire going to alt. Then I have a factory ground wire that is wired to the case of the alt. I have also convetered to a internal reg and hei. Hope this helps. The brown wire? Is it in the facory harness? I beleive that one went to the external reg and is no longer used. I used to have a wiring diagram but it was on my other compter and it crashed and this new one has windows vista on it and my old digi camera won't work with it or I would take a pic.

Re: charging system questions
Is it charging ,but not showing on the ammeter? If so check the 4 amp fuses located in eng compartment. One will be by the junction block on RH fender the other by left front of radiator support.

Re: charging system questions
no it is not charging and it shows that it is not charging on the gage. it does not have an ammeter it has a volt gage now. thhere is nothing on my fenders. the junction block on the left side(drivers side) core supp. has power going through it.

Re: charging system questions
What are the specs on the new alt? ie whats it fit? Mine is for a 80's model camaro, 105 amps. Where the plug- plugs into the alt are there numbers? That is where I got the number one and two from. The link that truckdude239 gave is how mine is wired.

Re: charging system questions
from the way you describe it, I think you may have a cs style alternator. If your plug has four terminals in it they should be labled S F L P (providing you have a cs). "S" requires battery voltage (just loop it from the threaded battery terminal on the back) "L" goes to the idiot light in the dash. "F" and "P" are not used. If you have the earlier SI model alternator the link in truckdude239's post will help. Still stuck? maybe this will help http://www.extreme4wheelin.com/tech/...ators/tech.htm
