You know, I have these four rims I need to refurb, and they have tires on em.

Any suggestions on how to easily remove a tire from a wheel in less than 2-3 minutes?

I tried using two tire irons to break the bead and wedge over the rim like I'd done in the past, but they were cheap tires and came off easy.

The tires are going off to recycle, so I don't care if I gotta cut em off. I gave up after 15 minutes of putzing around and figured I'd come here and ask before proceeding.

If the air is out get a razor and cut both sidewalls and beads. That should give the tire enough flex to get it off the rim.

That's part of the problem - the bead is steel belted, and so is the sidewall. It was tough enough that I'd have needed a grinder to cut through it, and I'm not going to make that kinda mess in my yard

I have the same problem. I have maybe 12 tires that i would like to strip from the rims.

I've used my skill saw to cut the sidewall around the bead before and then a hammer and chisel or prybar to break the bead, but still not fun. Once the bead is left, you could cut through it with a grinding wheel..

Still messy and smokey!

Tire shops don't charge much at all for dismount...why not just bring them there? Shouldn't cost more than $10 for all four.

Sounds like the easiest approach to me.

I thought about that. I just hoped there was some way I could do it myself. Trying to stuff four big ass wheels and tires in the back of my VW is a bear.

sawzall, or maybe see if you can find a mobile tire truck person, usually the people who do the semis have a machine on the truck

A sawsall doesn't work. It just vibrates the sidewall back and forth. That's why I had to switch to my trusty skill saw.

Just harder to corner with it..

I have used a Metabo angle grinder with cut off wheel and it worked great.

Once secured it does really well, especially for the price. But if you don't see your self doing it much, I'd go have someone dismount them for you.

i have one of these too, wait until they put it on sale, i got mine for around 30bucks, but you have to mount it

Shifty, If you were local I'd be happy to do them on my tire machine, but your not! Cheap or expensive, your tires should come off with tire irons. Are you standing on it to make sure that the bead is down in the drop center? If not, the bead will not come over the rim. Stand on one side of the tire to smash it down, and pry the opposite side up with your iron. Then go over a couple of inches and get a bite with your second iron. I've cut tires off of rims before and it is TONS more work than breaking them down.

Thanks, Bill, I'll give that a shot. Here's the catch - I jumped all 180lbs of my ass up and down on that joker and it just would NOT come off the bead. Maybe that's where I went wrong. It's been so long since I tried that I just couldn't remember how I did it the last time.

OhHHH, so you can't get the bead broke! Here is what you do:

Put the tire under your heaviest truck's bumper, and put a jack between the bumper and the side wall. Jack away until you have lots of pressure on the side wall. If it doesn't break loose, get a BFH and hit the side wall close to the jack until it comes loose.

I do have a couple more tricks up my sleeve for breaking beads, I'll post if you will need em.

No kidding!! I can completely lift my truck clear of the ground (both rear tires) by my bumper. And have several times (both intentionally and unintentionally).

I've changed tires before redneck style. It's not fun. Definitely worth the trip to the tire store. Aren't there any Les Schwabs down there?

Will do. If I sell some rims I have and have to take the tires off to cut down shipping, I'll take some with a unfooled-around-with clock in the background. Going to the pull apart soon and maybe getting another spare that has a better rim, and I will take pics if I have to cut that tire off. I would bet you $$$ and you could set the time limit(a resonable of course), but I dont know if that goes against any forum rules. If you gave me a razor and a pair of side cuts I'd have it off in under 2 min. Are you thinking of tin snips?
