airline routing ( quick question)

when you bag the front of these trucks , where are you guys running the airline? what i mean is , are you drilling a hole in the top or the back or wherever in the crossmember. (factory crossmember) any help would be great , pics would be even better.

Re: airline routing ( quick question)

I was interested in this too. I looked around and found three different installs of people who were running their lines through a hole drilled in the crossmember.

I reaelly want to see some feedback on this topic too, I'm definitely interested!

Re: airline routing ( quick question)

I've seen it where a hole is drilled through the side of the crossmember OR below the upper a arm. Simple grommet is used and/or cover your plastic line with rubber fuel line as an added safety measure.

The other option is to install a bulkhead somewhere on the crossmember. So basically you would run your line from the bag to the bulkhead, then from the bulkhead to your valves.

bulkhead:

Re: airline routing ( quick question)

i drilled a hole in the rear of the cross member and inserted a grommet to prevent the line from chaffing on the edge of the hole.

several guys here have used bulkhead type fittings with good results, but remember that more mechanical connections mean more chances for a leak to develop

EDIT: was typing while jlaird was posting

I'm in the "fewer fittings=fewer leaks" camp:

Frizzle, are those self tapping screws in that last pic? Does the screw go all the way through the frame and stick out the other side? I'm trying to figure out what the cleanest way is to fasten line clamps.

Yes. You can see that they really detract from my otherwise show-quality frame...

Good one, Frizzle. The bad thing is, YOUR frame IS show quality compared to mine. One day...

Re: airline routing ( quick question)

Well i ended up drilling a hole in the back of the crossmember like the one in the pic. I'll try to post pics of progress later. Also, I'll be running 2800 lbs. bags out back , this was recommended by a very experienced fabricator that i have known for 10 years , and who has bagged probably around 60 - 70 vehicles. I thought thes bags might be a little big but he said it would ride better. Has anyone else run these big bags out back on these trucks? I had 2800lbs. bags on the back of my bodydropped s-10 years ago and it was fine, but i was curious how they rode on these trucks.

Re: airline routing ( quick question)

I used these from Kugel Komponents ... 3/8" stainless with stainless screws .. you will need to drill & tap, but not a big deal and they look GREAT.

Re: airline routing ( quick question)

Shane,

Those are really nice. Thanks for the link. Have a question for ya. Did you use those on plastic air line? The first thing that came to my mind is the metal clamps rubbing a hole in the plastic. Usually those clamps that are lined in rubber are used for plastic line. Maybe I'm worrying too much?? What do you think?

Re: airline routing ( quick question)

Yes sir, 3/8" DOT plastic tubing. Nothing to rub as the tubing is held stationary and can not move.

Those are nice Shane. I think I'll go to those if/when I replace my lines with copper.

Yes, that is what I am doing only slams RS8's (now renamed RE8)

concerning the line brackets, what are other options to affix line to the frame (besides zip ties) I'm not saying I don't like the self tapping screws, just want to know all my options before I go start drilling holes in my frame.
