88-98 chevy question. (I know its in the wrong place)
So i posted this question in the right place with little to no response. Sorry if this pisses some off you off. Im going to buy my granfathers 93 chevy ex cab z71 soon. its got 60,000 original miles, 350 with a 460l. I was thinkin about throwing on a full edelebrock top end kit, cam , lifters, heads, intake. Its advertised to bring total HP and TRQU to just over 400. I figured the bottom is just gettin "broke in" and my grandpa dont drive over 60. Would this be a good idea? I've heard dont put a new top end on a used bottom. I can see this if the block has hard miles, or high miles. But all this has had is some garbage cans and pruning leftovers its whole life. What do ya think?

As was mentioned in your previous thread, can you do it yes, is it recommended..NO. Rgardless of what you think the driving conditions were, you are slapping on a significate power increase with a new top end to and an unknown bottom end. You could be throwing away a lot of money very quickly.
I would not risk the money your talking about on an engine I don't know.

I think the 350 for that year was rated around 230-240HP....at 400hp that is a BIG (almost double) jump to depend on parts unchecked..

Another thing to consider is your state emission laws.It would suck to spend all that cash then be told it wont pass inspection

And the transmission... the 700R4 (I think 93 was the last year for them), or even if it's a 4L60, is not rated for anywhere near 400 HP.

Your smartest move if you need more power, is to chip the truck. It won't cause much difference in internal stress. If you choose the right chip, it will still pass emissions. And it will be a lot cheaper so you can save up enough money to do it all right.

The stock injectors won't be able to handle the fuel requirements of that edelbrock package. You could upgrade to the 454 injectors. As far as the bottom end, if you know how your grandfather drove it I wouldn't touch it. I tore apart a 2nd gen 5.7 with 40k on it when I was working for a machine shop and it still had the crosshatch hone marks on the cyl. walls. If you're going to be racing it hard you would want to tear it down for a "look see". But if you are we wouldn't even be having this conversation because everyone knows anytime you put a high horse eng. in a stock truck and race it eventually everything else that is stock starts to break.
The chip sounds like a good idea. Also better exhaust is suppose to help these year trucks out alot. Last edited by airdale94; 04-18-2008 at 05:01 AM. Reason: add |

i have always heard, take care of the bottom end and the top end will take care of itself

can it be done Yes! is it as simple as bolting on the heads, cam, and intake ,no. as for the bottom end, if you pull it apart and it does not need to be bored, I would at least put in som flat top hyperutectics, or better yet forged pistons for the power you are after. and as said before, if you have emission laws in your area, it will not have a snowballs chance in H**L of ever passing. But it sounds fun! |

Re: 88-98 chevy question. (I know its in the wrong place)
I am lucky enough to have parents that live in a area that doesnt have to deal with emissons so I can just reg my truck up there. I totally forgot about it be computer control issue. Besides the computer, and headers, maybe a intake and holley TBI?
