70 C-10 Father Son Frame off summer project

Hello Everyone,
I just purchased this 1970 C-10 8ft Fleetside for my son. This is going to be his version of summercamp.
He is 11 years old and has always liked to help me work on our cars and trucks. This will be our biggest project yet. With your help we plan to do a complete frame off resto. We hope to have a really mean and nasty, slightly lowered, hot rod cruiser with a loud exhaust and fat rear tires by the end of this summer. We will be posting many pics and updates of our progress I hope you enjoy them.

Here are a few pics of what we have to work with. These were taking the same day we bought it.

Yup I couldnt see him wasting away all summer doing nothing but watching TV, playing video games or just running around getting in trouble in the neighborhood with friends. Plus he is really excited to start doing this. We talked about it before buying it and he knows its a lot of work and time but he wants to do it so here we are.

Believe me when I say the pictures make it look much better than it really is. It needs a lot of sheetmetal work. There is rust everywhere on this thing, but that is exactly what we wanted. Something we can tear apart fix, repair and rebuild.

We had to take that thing off. Neither one of us liked it.

Here is a pic of us both and our project

Re: 70 C-10 Father Son Frame off summer project

Ok we did a couple more small things today.
Before I post these I just wanted to clear something up. I know some of you are probally looking at this thread and saying "That is not a frame off" We will be getting to that point soon once my son is out of school for the summer. As it is right now its a running driving truck and we have local cruise in style car shows here every single saturday from april to october so right now we are driving it and enjoying it as is with small tweaks here and there with the big frame off coming soon.
Ok now for the work we did today.

First we really wanted the old very ugly rear bumper to come off. It was welded to the frame so it took some work but its gone now.

Looks much better. Next we needed to remove some really ugly exhaust tips

Then we cleaned up the battery box area for the new Red Top Optima Battery that we will be buying tomorrow. Plus we installed a power steering bracket and header stud. The guy we bought it from had no bracket and the ps belt squealed like a pig. MUCH better now

Next on our to do list will be to clean up the engine compartment and install the new battery/ Purchase our 2/4 lowering kit and install the new shocks and springs and we will be cleaning up and painting the rear end and installing a nice chrome cover. Hope you enjoy the pics my son is having a blast with this project. Remember its his truck, how cool is that? I wish I had my own hot rod truck when I was 11

We selected the 2/4 drop for now to keep it simple, just put on some new shocks and springs and back on the road. This will be a complete frame off project once my son is out of school for the summer but right now we wanted to keep it a running and driving truck.
I was told that if we went any lower than 4 inches in the back that we would have to notch the frame??? If that is true we will save that effort along with replacing spindles and drum brakes in the front for the summer frame off.

PS Kevin we will still be odering your plans and building the bed and cab lift and cab flip dolly and for those of you who dont know who dont know what Im talking about check it out

O we will be soon enough. Right now we are still having fun driving this thing around with the new huge tires and loud dual exhaust, fun fun.
In about a month once my son is home from school for the summer we will be doing a complete frame off. Lots of cut'n, weld'n and sparks a fly'n

man...

That is so cool that you and your son can spend time together like that....

Keep your ears open, you'll never know what your son might share with you, and he may even come up with some great ideas for the truck...

I hadn't seen this thread until now. Very cool!! My daughter (12) is somewhat involved in my truck project. I told her she'll be driving her friends to school in it once in a while when she's a little older.

Keep up the good work!

Cool I have a 8 year old daughter. Since she was about 4 she could pick out a Chevy bowtie in any parking lot. Her brother and I are trying to get her more involved but right now she is still too young. When she gets older I plan on buying her a project car to be her first car just like my sons truck, a Camaro with a mild 305 or something.

I know we havnt done much yet but school still has a couple more days. Stay posted we will be starting the project very soon and posting many pics almost daily of everything we do to it.

I am so jealous... You keep buying cars for the kids and i am gonna petition for you to adopt me... The biggest thing dad ever bought me was braces, and neither one of us wanted those...

LOL...

Re: 70 C-10 Father Son Frame off summer project

I am building my son his first truck in a few months (colecting parts right now) and it will be a cool project that my wife will be helping me on. You see my son is only 11months old but I thought how cool it would be for his first truck to be one he remembers since day one. Plus by the time he is ready for it I am sure it will need a new build to fit the hover craft system

Keep it up and remember the more time you spend doing projects with your kids the less time they have to get into typical kid trouble or worse.
