dipping?

what are the pros and cons for dipping body parts (primarily a cab) to clear rust off of them? how does the double shelled roof react to having been cleaned to bear metal - or was it never primed in the first place. considering haveing this done but would like to hear some feedback. does anyone know of some good websites talking about doing this?

thanks in advance.

From what I have read, this is the best way to go. The only disadvantage is , as you noted, the double walls.
You will need to make sure to get something in there to protect the re-virginized metal.

I brought this up awhile back. I hope you get some good replies. I also sent an email to Ed at Mothertruckers about this and have his reply if you would like me to send it to you. Make sure I get your e-mail address.
I am trying to find a dipping company here in the midwest, but none yet.
We have a 10,000 gallon primer dip tank at work and I plan to dip my parts after they are repaired so that the double wall areas are covered well. I can then sandblast any areas that might need the primer removed for any reason.
I am going to start with bedsides and doors. I will post later on how it goes. Good luck.

TXGary told me about a place called www.metalrehab.com

This seems like a good way to restore, but it ain't cheap.

I am relying on Chemprime (similar to Oshpo) in the areas that are prone to rust that you can't blast. 3M makes some products you can spry in areas through a wand to coat them.

I have my inner roof skin out right now. There is a piece of felt (or similar material) that's up there to stop the vibration of the two panels. This would also give the outer some strength. From what I can see, the factory left this area as bare steel. There is slight surface rust on both panels. This rust would be similar to what you would see on an old model A. Not eating it away, but just there.

What would the chemicals from the bath do to that felt, I have no idea.

nu2-72: i would like ed's email reply (jmjeffcoat@arcongrp.com).

the place that i would get the cab acid dipped can't dip to prime. i would have to do it the old fashioned way - spraying it on. this would not allow me to get it between the roof shells.

thanks for the imput.

Had my C-30 body dipped and primed with DP-90. They used a Body Schutz Applicator Gun with a 36" wand. Went in on clearence light holes on roof to prime between the panels. The wand is 3/8" Dia. Work was done at Metal Rehab Technologies, Inc. Forth Worth Texas 1-800-856-1824 or www.metalrehab.com

My '67 cab has something inside it...might be that felt...at least it burns and smells like it. I found this out while welding up the holes from the cab lights.
