Whistling carb

I just bought a carb from a guy the other day. I finally got around to putting it on and it sounds like it is sucking air bad. The intake is a spread bore Do I need the adapter or will it work as it is? Carb has the 4 same size holes.

If you can't tell, I don't know all the correct words to use.

You have a square bore carb If you have a q-jet manifold ( two different size holes ) you will need the adapter plate.

Ok, my intake (Performer Intake) has the two side by side holes. Do I still need an adapter plate, or will a square bore gasket work?

Your intake manifold and carb bores should match up, if they are different, you will need an adapter plate (if available) or the correct carb for the intake. Does it seem to be idling higher than normal too?

Yes, it does seem like it's idling higher. The truck runs much better than it did with the Holley (couldn't stand that hunk) on it. I can't put the air cleaner on it either.

The Edelbrock Performer intake will take either style carb. Match the gasket with the carb & manifold & make shure all pasages are covered. Let us know what carb you have, some of the old Roch. 4 jets had passages for exhaust heat. They will not work without a plate in between the carb & manifold. They are pretty old fashioned & not very good for today's engines. See if you can tell where the noise is comeing from. Hold a rag around the carb with it running. If you get to the area causing the problem it will usually go away. It might be a gasket in the carb. or a bad idle mixture adjustment. I have never bought a used carb that I didn,t have to put a kit in.

The noise (loud) is coming from the primaries.

Have you adjusted the idle mixture screws. Back them out about 1 turn & slowly turn them in with the engine idleing till it starts to slow down then back it up till it smooths out, usuallyabout a 1/2 turn.

No bolt in the back of the carb, problem solved!
