69/70 trucks with 71/72 grille

Possible? Any fitment issues or reasons this DOESNT work. Im getting tired of seeing the 69/70 grilles for 500-800$ for NOS.

You need a grill support for '71-'72, otherwise it'll bolt right up...

Don't forget the difference with the blinkers - you will need the 71-72 style front bumper if you change over.

A PO of my '70 decided this was the ay to go as well. Think it over REAL hard before you pop the cash. Its the #1 thing that drives my nuts about my truck (other than the current cracked head).

I think the hood latch is different also. It's offset just a little to the right so you can reach it thru the grill!

Re: 69/70 trucks with 71/72 grille

why would you want to change out that beautiful 69-70 grille!!

I completely understand the price issue. You could actually buy an NOS grille several years back for under $300.

Re: 69/70 trucks with 71/72 grille

I guess the biggest thing that drives me crazy is the double symbol. I know thta could be corrected with '71/2 hood, but why didn't he do that in the first place?

If you want more specific pics, let me know what you'd like to see. I'll get some sots while I'm out there finishing up my current project on it.

Re: 69/70 trucks with 71/72 grille

You will need the side bumper brackets, in 71-72 these are longer than the 69-70 because of the park lamps in the bumper.

I have done the conversion with no major problems or adjustments.

Re: 69/70 trucks with 71/72 grille

I thought about the long and hard and I came to the conclusion that I just wasn't going to spend $700+ on a grill for a driver. After considering both options, I decided to buy a repop grill that has the CHEVROLET lettering that comes as a decal. I bought mine from Tim Christian for a little over $300 and unless you are standing 3 feet away you can't tell its not a GM grill. The decals are in the same style font as the stamped lettering in the GM grills. I will get you some pics tomorrow if want to see it.

I'd like to see this as well. I've seen those letters before, how did you get them lined up?

I measured when the bottom of the letters were on the factory grill and put some masking tape to keep the level and I measured where each letter was and positioned them accordingly. You can put mix up some soapy water and the letters will move around until you get the location right. When I got them where they were supposed to be, I dabbed them with a damp paper towel until I worked out all the bubbles. They turned out very nice.

Re: 69/70 trucks with 71/72 grille

Friend of mine thats on the forum as well converted to a 71-72 grille, but used a billet insert and kept the bow tie on the hood. He just used some wire ties to hold up the turn signal lights up behind the billet grille. Looks good.

Re: 69/70 trucks with 71/72 grille

OK OK - Here are the pics!

As you can tell it is very convincing. 98% of the people out there would never even notice it. It would truly take a fanatic (like most of us) to ever notice it, but even then we'd have to be close. On the last shot I have it compared to the factory grill in my beater truck, and you can see the letters are the same size and font.

I have a decent 69/70 if someone wants to trade for a 71/72 if you can figure a good, inexpensive way to ship, unless you are in or around So. Cal.

How does the shine on the reproduction compare to the stock? Does it look more like the chrome bumper? Thanks!
