charcoal filter in air cleaner?

What is this thing? I already cut it out and the trucks idle smoothed right out. It sits in the air cleaner housing behind the air filter, and is the same size as the ID of the air filter. What is its function?

Like Isaid, I already cut it out,so I dont have pics. Thanks
-Lance

BTW it's an '84 C30w/454

It's the flame arrester in case you have a big backfire your engine doesn't go up in smoke. I pulled mine off also

Re: charcoal filter in air cleaner?

Thanks.
After I removed it,the truck seems to run MUCH better. Seems like maybe it was choking it down.
