'72 K20 Project Starting
Just picked this up last Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa.
Not sure how far (or where) I want to take this project, but it should be fun..... it's got: a Holley 600 cfm carb on it Warn Lockouts on the front HEI Distributor 3" lift with 33x12.50 tires a little rustier than I had hoped, but still salvageable... and damn, this thing is big.... had to use a short 3 step step ladder the change the plugs, and I was in the engine bay to change the back 2 on the drivers side.... needed to add 3 qts ATF for the tranny to engage, and got the engine running. needs to have fresh gas though..... and the brakes bled better.

Nice start to a project! Too bad you weren't closer, I'd make you a heck of a deal on a nice bed.

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
I was draining bad gas out of the tank last night, and noticed that at some point in it's life, a motorcycle license plate was used as part of a cab corner repair
the tank was really bad inside, so I ordered a new one for now.

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
saturday, I was able to move the beast (idled without dying), and was able to put it to the far side of the driveway, so I could access my garage again (get the Firebird out)...
got the seat out yesterday, in preparation for a new fuel tank. Need to remove the speakers and 2 amps previous owner had put under the seats. also "repaired", and I use the term very lightly, the drivers side rocker. it was replaced long ago, and was just riveted in it looks like. I just have 3 screws in it now to hold it in place, until I get a little more metal behind it for the short term. it would appear that the top of the cab is about 6-7 inches taller than my 4x4 Yukon 1500.

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
new gas tank and sending unit are in. also "fixed" the floors for the time being to get it sealed. rust converter, bedliner, and sheet metal. even recreated the "channel" between the floor and the rocker lip with some strategically placed aluminum channel.
I cleaned up what was left of the original seat cover, and used 2 rolls of some strategically placed duct tape, to repair the original seatcover, before putting on the "universal bench" cover. no real seatcover yet, as my bench has a few broken springs, and will need some foamwork later. put in some green seatbelts (inner bolts) so now "legal" for the family. and they go nicely (not) with the blue outer belts. and put in a gas pedal too also installed some door weatherstrip from a junkyard '91 Dodge Dakota. fit nicely. had to cut off about 4". also picked up a rear slider, but will wait on that install.... will try to get some new pics when it stops raining!

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
took off the old holley, and put a fairly recent rebuilt holley 4160 on.
engine seems to run well, but smokes quite a bit. really needs exhaust....

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
Made a little bit of progress on my truck....
Here's the new crate 350. Picked up a junkyard hood for $40 (in my original color too!) to replace the one damaged by a tree.... Installed junkyard tailgate ($35) and added a quick coat of paint as a sealer... old: new:

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
tailgate cont.
also added a mid-70s steering wheel. feels like a truck now and modified some 73-87 below eyeline mirrors, to fit the original 67-72 mirror holes. pass side turned out better, but they work great....

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
yeah, it's just tha basic 350 crate with 3yr/100,000 mile warranty. 250 hp.
still better than the 175hp stock 350. still working kinks out, as sitting for years has it's downsides... at least it was sitting on cement and didn't have grass growing up around it.....

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
ok. now has new shoes, cylinders, and seals in back, and new pads up front. also added about 6 feet of tailpipe on each side, onto the 5" that was all that I had past the new mufflers. much quieter ride now.
was really resonating before, to where I was getting a headache

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
Great progress man. Hey, how did Terry's treat ya on the brakes? I plan to completely replace my brakes this winter, MC/booster all the way to the pads. I could do it myself, but i really hate running/bending lines. i'm considering taking it to someone to do it, and it would give me a reason to talk to him about that 72 sitting out front.

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
nice project, be careful with the rubber fuel line near the exhaust though.

Re: '72 K20 Project Starting
I rebuilt my heat control unit, and put in a new fan switch. found that the PO had disconnected the switch and had a direct line.
still no fan, so more testing tomorrow. and hoping to install a diff bench seat tomorrow, and maybe get the radio working again
