I need a new rear end
I need to replace the rear end in Frances with a later model 6 lug rear.
She still has the original and it's starting to growl! I understand that I will need to get new spring perches and weld them on. I also read that the original rear is 55” backing plate to backing plate or 62” wide at the wheel mounts. SO ..anyone know what year rear end is 6 lug with close to the same width? Frances has a 72 350 Target motor with a 350 automatic. The rear is the original and I belive the gears were 3:90 that have been to low for normal highway driving. Thanks Cadman

Re: I need a new rear end
Early to mid '80's Jeep Wagoneer rear is a dana 44 axle with a centered diff and 60" width, 6 lug. 88-98 2wd Chevy 2500 light duty rear is a semi-float 14 bolt and is 65" wide, 6 lug. Someone else will have to chime in with 67-72 widths as I know there were a couple different ones.

Re: I need a new rear end
Are you looking to stay original? I have a 56 Chevy truck, pretty rough, I'll sell the whole truck for $250, it has the original rear in it.
I'm about 4 hours west of J-ville. |

Re: I need a new rear end
You can use a rear from a 1964-69 chevy 1/2 ton truck, they are six lug axles and the same width from drum to drum as your factory rear. The driveshaft input should be the same making the spring perches the only item thant would need to be changed. As an added bonus they came with 3.07 - 3.73 gears, if you get lucky you might even find one with a posi unit.
I have personally helped two friends install this type of axle in task force type trucks over the years, and it can be accomplished over a weekend. Also, I've helped put one in a 1950 chevy 1/2 ton recently - that one required replacement of the closed driveline.
