Question Stock Bench Seat Question

I'm getting ready to get my stock bench seat re-upholstered, but before I got the truck painted, it was leaning on the back of the cab under the glass and had rubbed against the paint and wore it down. Now is there a way to fix the backing to support it self upright, or should I try and find another stock seat? Thanks

Does yours flip forward?
Amm 3 of the ones I own/owned, did not flip, but some one removed the screw in the GMC that held it upright, causing the same you are describing.

could always put 1/8 or 3/16 spacer under rear legs of seat when you go to reinstall

Mine doesn't fold forward, but it doesn't hold upright at all. In fact, now that it's off, it lays all the way back to the floor like a recliner. What screw is that, and is it easily replacable? Thanks. Also, if I have them replace the foam and stuff, will it be as comfortable as new? Because my seat is trashed. Thanks..........

I re-covered the bench in my '71 recently, so maybe I can help. There are supposed to be two large phillips-head bolts, holding each side of the back frame, to the seat frame. It sounds like you only have one on each side. Should be an easy fix, once you find the bolts. You should try to find original style bolts, because they are a flat-head style, so they can't be felt through the seat cover (the seat back side frame is countersunk for these bolts). As far as the "feel" of the seat, after it's been re-covered, a lot depends on which style of seat you have, and it's condition. I'm told that there were two bench designs. They all have molded foam in the seat back, and that seems to hold up pretty well. Most of the seat cushions do not have molded foam, but instead use sheet foam over serpentine springs. Mine is like that. If the springs are not broken, you can add a new layer of 3/4" thick sheet foam, and get good results. If your serpentine springs are broken, you need to replace them. If your seat is the newer design, with a molded foam pad, you can buy a replacement. In that case your seat should feel like new. I prefer the original seats, because of retaining the stock seating height. My stock bench is really quite comfortable, and I put 100 miles a day on my truck. Hope this info helps some. Good luck!

What I hate about my seat is that it sits so close to the rear of the cab I can't rest my arm up there! I may try to move it forward a tetch.

HEre is the pic of the 2 screws that hold the seat upright on a NON-TILT seat. There is supposed to be a flap that covers it, but mine is ripped off.
