What are these relays
What is the bigger relay to the upper right of the fuse box? Mine is burnt up and it was making my battery go dead over night. I unhooked it and now I don't miss anything and my battery is good, so what does it do and what is it?
Also, what is the smaller relay at the borrom right of the fuse box? Both of the wires that are hooked to mine are cut, so what is it supposed to do? |

Re: What are these relays
Big one is the Horn relay. I just replaced mine yesterday. Someone else will have to help with the smaller one. If not look on here for wiring diagrams and trace the wires. Thats how I found the horn relay.

Re: What are these relays
Could it be an anti-dieseling relay?

Re: What are these relays
The small one looks like a circuit breaker to me.

Re: What are these relays
The smaller one (with your finger on it in the first picture) is a circuit breaker someone has added. It isn't factory installed.

Re: What are these relays
Trace wire off the small circuit breaker to see where it goes.

Re: What are these relays
The horn relay is working properly. You have a problem up in the column with the horn button grounding out. The 2 most likely causes are an aftermarket wheel improperly installed, or a loose turn signal switch lever. Some one unplugged the horn(s) to shut them up and never fixed it.
As said before, the small one is a circuit breaker, as found at any parts store for the last 20+ years. |

Re: What are these relays
Do what Longhorn Man says. I use the following puller for steering wheels and it works fine: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=37824

Re: What are these relays
That small relay has to be something someone added. I went and looked at my 69 step and there isnt one there. And I know when I ripped both of the 69 fleets apart...neither one has it either.

Re: What are these relays
Longhorn Man...you're good.
I've noticed that the previous owner has unhooked the horn, just as you said. It has the original steering wheel though. I think the horn has a mechanical problem, not an electrical one, because when I plug the horn back up it works fine, but sometimes the horn button will stay down until I pry it back up. After I pry it back up the horn quits. It's like the horn button hangs up on something in there, any ideas? I'm thinking that even though the horn is unplugged maybe the horn button was mashed in and it burnt up the relay...could that happen? Because I pulled the relay cover off and it is definetly toast. |

Re: What are these relays
I was just thinking about something funny. When I got my 69 fleet last year...everytime I turn the wheel to the right the horn would blow. I unhooked my relay to stop that problem. Years ago my best friends mom had a 70 that did the same thing!

Re: What are these relays
you need a steering wheel puller.
Pop off the horn button remove retaining nut holdiong on the wheel (3/4 I think?) remove wheel per tool instructions. slide the canceling cam by sliding up off the shaft. carefully tighten the phillips screw that holds the arm. Not a bad I dea to remove the screw, and put some thread locker on it. If the plastic it is mounted on is cracked, then a new signal switch or a repair kit is avalible. |
