Okay 73-87 ls swap guys/gals, I need ya.

It looks like our plan to make the 67-72 swap headers fit the 73-87 won't work. Sooooo, I need to find a truck local to me (SoCal. area) to make the changes on. You may recall my attempts to have the driverside header mocked up in the field but upon further review, It's going to take alot more effort than Chris and I originally thought. I'm totally good with making a new d/s header but my biggest problem is finding such a truck.

Anyone close by want a free set of headers?? Please give me a call or pm to discuss the details.

Thanks,
Jamie Joyce

Re: Okay 73-87 ls swap guys/gals, I need ya.

Assuming these are long tubes, what crossmember(s) do you plan to build these around ? There's 2 that I know of, the double hump, and the single hump with catalytic converter area.

The double hump makes for a very clean dual exhaust.

The single hump catalytic converter crossmember makes for a complete MESS of an exhaust. The passenger side ends up just fine, but the drivers side has to have a huge bend in the pipe because the catalytic converter area makes things weird.

Just some things to consider. Of course if these are shorties, then ignore this.

73-87 chevy truck with an ls series motor swapped in. Perferably one that has used a specific engine mount kit to install it.

I will need the truck for about a week.

Running is a plus but not necessary.

You will recieve the first set as payment once the first production run happens.

Thats about it. Give me a call if you can help.

Thanks!,

Not to break this trend up to bad, what is the chance that the 67-72 headers would fit the 88-98 trucks?

What did not fit on the 73-87---I have to ask, because my 68 has an 87 K member in it. I just got my Thorley headers for the LS-1 that is going into it.

It's the driver side. It hits on the brake booster bracing and the column shifter, if you are going that route. This of course, is just the 73-87 trucks, All is good on the 67-72's.

Could the brake booster brace be trimmed to allow clearance?
What about those 'cable style' column shift linkage set-ups from Lokar or Ididit?

The easy item would be trimming the 4l80e housing ear that's on the drivers side. What the heck is the ear for anyway? There's not one on the pass side....

Re: Okay 73-87 ls swap guys/gals, I need ya.

Not really, it is close enough that it would be really close to the floorpad and it may need trimming to make it fit. I had to cut the tube off to get it in there.

You could purchase a cable shifter, but I think Jamie would rather it fit a factory truck so there isn't any disclaimer stating you have to trash you existing shifter for an aftermarket one.

You could cut off the ear, I was just pointing that out.

I can`t help but I am cosidering a 5.3 swap in the future. Any idea on what the headers wil cost? also, those of you in Ca that have done this swap, what needs to be done as far as smogging the truck with the later engine? sorry thats a little off topic but figured while I was here..

Re: Okay 73-87 ls swap guys/gals, I need ya.

My truck's motor is currently installed 4" off the firewall. Thought about mounting motor closer, but using stock AC compressor would be a no-go. Wish I was closer to help. Truck's running, but has a trans leak & headlight hi/lo beam lever is broke (means no lights at all).

Good luck on the design. Curious of cost, btw...
