Help a new guy w/ his '72's exhaust... - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

First, I've been a longtime reader and now a firsttime poster.

Now onto the important stuff...I've got a '72 Chevy with a stock 350 engine.

I just replaced my old failing dual exhaust w/ a 2.25" setup with two Magnaflow SS mufflers hoping to acheive a nice deep sound w/ performance. The exhaust exits right out in front of the rear tires.

The truck had noticeably greater throttle response, but the sound is awful. Hardly any of the deep growl that I was seeking...and it sort of ticks like a leak is present but there isn't any...all of the ticking sound is coming directly out of the mufflers outlet.

So, here is my question. I don't want anything too loud that will cause a drone and resonance in the cab, but I want a nice deep rumble. What kind of mufflers would you recommend? I've been told by a local mechanic that the Magnaflows are GREAT on higher hp vehicles (300+) but since they are a straight thru design he said they don't sound nearly as good on lower hp vehicles as a chambered muffler will. He recommended I try a Flo-Pro MX 500, a Flowmaster Super 44, or a Cherry Bomb Pro or Vortec series.

Any thoughts you guys have would be greatly appreciated. I plan on keeping my 260 horse 350 until it dies, so replacing the engine right now is not an option.

flowmasters sound real good with a cam thats what i run on my truck i forgot what series it is but mine sounds real good at idle with a small cam but driving on the highway it is really to loud so i go with something in the middle that flowmaster offers

I always used Flows but have recently changed to Spintech because I like the sound better. Check Youtube for some vids to get an idea of what different sounds you can get with different combos.

my 72 w/350 has a 2.25" dual setup from classic parts. It's all bolt on and has a nice little rumble. I'm welding up some cherry bombs later on down the road. It's kinda hard to hear the exhaust with 8 feet of bed.

(of course I don't have that interior humm I had w/ flows
anymore either now) Are you running an X or an H pipe?

PS - Mine dumps in same place, people say it's bad @ss

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone...I've been doing some more research and talked to a good friend about 30 minutes from where I live at here in West Lafayette, IN. He owns a muffler shop and has performed custom exhaust work for about 30 years. Here is his two cents...

1) Magnaflows are GREAT mufflers, but only sound good on certain vehicles.
2) Magnaflows sound really good on 300+hp vehicles.
3) Magnaflows have a straight thru design with small louvers in the pipe.
4) This differs from glasspacks that have larger louvers in the pipe=louder.
5) He always recommends chambered mufflers for a nice, deep tone.

Based upon all of that input and after listening to a couple of his vehicles that had the GM 260hp and 290hp 350's in them, I think I'm going to remove the Magnaflows and use them on a '67 Chevy II I'm restoring, and go with a chambered muffler (Cherry Bomb Pro, Flowmaster Super 44, Flo-Pro) on my '72 pickup. He said he would try some different things to let me hear the sound prior to clamping it all down tight. My biggest worry is that it will be too loud given that my pipes turn out the side into 3.5" tips right before the rear tires.

I have lousy cherry bombs that burned through the glass after about six months. They're all about the drone. I have plans to replace them with an X pipe.

Pypes makes a good muffler, rated by CFM, the way they should be.
