Nother new guy here

Howdy from North Idaho. Finally moved to a place where I can tear in to my 70 GMC. Probably won't hear too much from me at first. I don't want to be one of those guys that gets on a new forum and asks a ton of stupid questions

Re: Nother new guy here

Friendly bunch aintcha? Quick question, I stopped by the local wrecking yard cause I need a bed for my truck, and they had one in decent shape, asking $350. It's not perfect, but its better than mine. Is this an alright deal? Its a longbed fleetside like mine, and the tailgate is bowed outward like most of these old farm trucks around here.

$350 is not a bad price if there is not extensive body work that can not be easily fixed. But it really depends on how bad your existing bed is and the chances for you to run across another. Is there alot of rot in the one you are looking at? Can you provide pics of your bed and the one you are looking at purchasing? I'm sure you'll get the skinny from this fine crew of experts on this board.

Re: Nother new guy here

There is not really any rot in either to speak of. With my bed, both taillight areas are dinged and dented( thank my wife for that) and the bottom edge on the passenger side is curled up a little like a previous owner got high centered on a stump or something. And alot of other small dents in places that would seem to be hard to massage out. I am doing this truck entirely on my own including the body work and paint, and I can't afford to be buying a bunch of new body panels so I would like to start with something a little better. The bed is about the only part of the body that I don't feel comfortable doing, The rest of it isn't bad. I'll probably need to weld in new kick panels, and the lower part of the passenger fender that gets eaten by the battery. I'm more comfortable with my cut and re weld skills than my hammer and dolly skills. Anyway, enough rambling.

Re: Nother new guy here

If there's not any rot and you're going to save yourself time on bodywork, then I'd get the other bed for $350. Once you weigh the cost of time/labor and replacing the the sides with new metal, $350 is a small investment. Especially if your bed has messed up tail light areas; those run about $70 each for aftermarket patches.
Good luck on the new bed and keep us posted.

Re: Nother new guy here

I stopped by a body shop today that also has a sand blaster to see how much it would take strip that bed before I take it home. He told me it would take 4-5 hours at $75/hour. Does this sound right or should I keep looking? I think the bed has original paint and very little rust.
