Can Any One Tell How Many Leafs I Can Take Out To Lower It About 4-5 Inches Or The Best Way To Lower The Truck . I Have A Total Of 8 Leafs On My Leaf Springs

Taking leaves out will let it settle down.To get that much guys do axle-flips where the axle gets moved over the leaves.There are other ways offered these days.There are spring mounts that locate the spring eyes higher up,leafs with an upward bend out of the eyes and little arch,and longer shackles.

I removed the lower three on my 68 GMC and it lowered it about 2 inches. Now, I'm going to get some lowering shackles for another 2 inches.

I didn't want to notch the frame by doing a flip kit. If I didn't do the notch, the frame would be about 1/2 to 1 inch from the rubber stop.

A search on leaf springs will give you some good infor...

I agree with SLVESSELS go with early classic. Thats where I bought my 4" drop springs. And 2.5" spindals with no problems.

My 68 GMC shortbed came with 8. The guy I bought it from told me that his dad ordered it with heavy duty springs because it was a farm truck. He used to haul feed sacks with it for his cattle. According to him, they used to load it up with 50lbs sacks even with the top of the cab... I don't think I'll be doing that...

The shortest one is on top on this pic.

trust me, it don't work to well unless you rebuild the axle.

It is sort of different. If you notice I don't have the square U bolts. Took the pic while I was trying to figure out how many leaves to take out.

I decided on the bottom three and left the short one on top as a spacer. It still seems a little bouncy on dirt roads (crappy shocks) but not bad on the highway.

I think you could take 2 or 3 out, which would put you down a bit, but probably not much. Like several have said above, if you want a noticealble drop, you will more than likely need to pick up a flip kit. A well engineered flip kit will allow you to retain a smooth ride and "some" carrying capacity.

just my .02. but what do I know, I have coils.....

On my post above, I mentioned I took three out. It dropped it about 2 inches. I'm also going with the lowering shackles to give me a couple of more inches. I'm not going to be using it for hauling but I'm going to hold on to the the extra leaves just in case.

If you want 4" of drop you can install a drop shackles and hangers is cheap and easy and in the front you can install a drop coil springs... If you want more than 4" you can install a flip kit

My truck has a HD suspension with 8 leafs I removed 2 leafs and dearched de longest... now I have 3" of drop.. I will install a drop shackles to obtain 2" more

the springs are pretty easy, I would start from the bottom and remove the helper then skip ever other one. You can do this without removing from the shackles. it makes it easier to replace the center bolt. If you have a second set of hands to help seat the axle You may have to get shorter u-bolts or put some washers in to fill the space. I spent the extra money and had the bolts made at a axle shop($35). The shackles are pretty cheap. Any of the parts houses(LMC) or a local shop for less that $60. Early classic industries is were I got mine and I did have a problem with them hitting the bed when the springs moved. I would recommend grinding the top as much as possible so you have atleast a 1/4" between the shackle and the bed.

On mine it wasn't that easy. If you're going to remove the whole spring asm, raise the truck to remove the tension off them.

I did one side at a time. I removed the lower bolt on my shock then removed the u-bolts, the nut on the center bolt that holds them together and removed the shackle bolts and nuts (that was a pain).

I used a big c-clamp on the front and the back of the springs to hold them together and raised the truck higher to remove the complete asm.

The second time I did it, I didn't remove the shackles. Did one side at a time.

1. I removed the u-bolts, center bolt nut, lower shock bolt, used the c-clamps on the top 5 leaves only so they would shift on me.

2. Raised the frame up until the springs came off the axle mount.

3. removed the 3 lower springs.

So even with the early classics 1.5" drop shackles you would hit the bed?
Does that mean that thepeople with the 2" DJM drop shackles had to clearance the bed to use them?
