Killed the tranny

I think I killed the tranny in the K5 today. I knew I was gonna replace the TH350 with an overdrive at some point, but didn't expect to have to do it this soon. I was running the truck up and down the street in front of the shop. Truck was pulling hard around 4500 RPM in 2nd, it hesitated, then no more go. Coasted to a stop (the engine still runs fine). It has no forward gears 1st, 2nd, or 3rd, or reverse. Dropped the truck into 4LO, and nothing there either. I checked the fluid and it still looks clean...dipstick just say a pint low. This sucks.

Re: Killed the tranny

Dude that sucks. Keep us posted on what it is. I want to put a meet and greet together in August or early Sept. Hopefully we'll both be up and running. I'm just about to get my motor started and broken in. Hopefully my tranny works. I have no idea if it even works. You gotta come by and check it out. Gimme a shout if you need a hand. Later, Mario.

Re: Killed the tranny

Sorry to hear that, at least now you have an "excuse" to make the 700R4upgrade. Is the tranny making any grinding noise or anything when you shift it into a gear or is it basically silent?

Re: Killed the tranny

Sounds like something is whining / spinning. But no grinding when shifting thru the gears with throttle. Best case, I'm thinking I blew up the torque converter.

Re: Killed the tranny

My guess would be the torque converter. The oil would be brown and smell 'burnt' if you had valves or something else go south in the guts (from personal experience)

Re: Killed the tranny

Pump maybe wit the whine, at any rate it'll need to be gone through or it is the perfect time for a 700r4!

Re: Killed the tranny

I checked the dipstick with the truck off and it was about 2" up the dipstick. I then started the truck and the level on the dipstick dropped. So, fluid is at least moving somewhere.

Your already running an auto, stay with an auto.

As usual the distance kills but I have a good running th-350 sittin' here with your name on it.

If you do go 700r, there's several 'small' things to do to one if you want it to survive, once those are done, it's a damn good tranny IMO.

Have an extra one of those too...

Re: Killed the tranny

I do have a 205. We'll check all of the above. But the only way to tell what's busted is to pull the tcase and tranny.

Unbolt dshafts, and you can slide the transfercast back where it is enough to get the collar out.
