dont laugh im having issues

ok so i believe ive totally pulled what is known as an brain fart..
be it the beer, lack of shop time lately, or being in a house full of women (wife n daughters mother-in-law etc..etc)
i have this question..

3.73:1 is a "high gear" for a ring and pinion right?>
meanwhile
4.56:1 is low correct??
i was going to order new gears for my truck, and i poulled a brainfart
so the closer i get to a 1:1 ration the "higher the gear" right?
ugggh help me please im soo dumb today

Re: dont laugh im having issues

Hi Ratio = Low number 2.73 to 1
Low Ratio = High Number 4.56 to 1

That's OK I get the farts everyday

Have a good one, Terry

I always think, the higher the number the lower the gear !!

Re: dont laugh im having issues

It really depends on the application. My experience has been that 3.08 is good for fuel mileage, but lacks in low end grunt. A 3.42 is a really good all purpose gear that gets decent mileage and pulls well down low. You give up at least one mpg with a 3.73 but it pulls great down low and gives lots of torque through out the power band.

This is based on 2wd SBC equipped trucks that I have owned.

Re: dont laugh im having issues

I've been playing around with a tire/gear/tranny/rpm/mph calculator and 4.10's look ideal with a 700R4 and 28" tire...

Re: dont laugh im having issues

weekend drag machine go with 4.10 / otherwise go wit h 3.73-- the perfect gear for both street & strip with a 700 r4

Re: dont laugh im having issues

i have an 83 with 6in of lift
37's
and a 350attached to 4speed w granny low..
maby i should ask in the 4x4 forums...
hmmmm
i suck at this sometimes im just soooo stumped i wasfiguring i'll lift my truck off teh gorund next week rotate the tires to guesstimate my gear ratio and move a noticible amount towards the "lower number"
i need a tach bad, but to be honest i rapped out my motor the other day FullOpen throttle and only got to 47 MPH in third gear from a dead stop...
that sucks.. but hell the truck can tow a house no problem
but first gear is utterly useless..

Re: dont laugh im having issues

are you sure the transfer case isn't in low range? you should be going alot faster than 47 in 3rd gear, granny gear or not. even with 4.10 rear you would be going faster than that

I swapped my 84 from a 3.42 to a 3.73 and gained low end pull and in the end stayed the same on mileage, due to putting the engine in the power band properly.

Re: dont laugh im having issues

ok here is a way to get in the ball park on the rear end and tranny...4th gear (counting the granny as first) should be 1 to 1 ratio

Re: dont laugh im having issues

t case was in 2w high.. that definatley works the 4wd is awsome but i took the axes from a buddy's 84 diesel 4x4....
so im not sure y know.. it'll cruise at 60 no problem.. it jsut takes a minute to get there..
and the 47 was me trying to see how fast my truck can get up and go...
blah!
but it cruises fine i usually roll around town in third (40-45)...
