I'm at my wit's end with this gas smell in the cab. I thought I was on to something when I found that my 70 CST-10 (no vent in tank) did not have a vented cap on it. I bought a vented cap and the gas smell in the cab is still very bad. Every time I drive it (even with the windows wide open) I arrive at my destination reeking of gas fumes. I've sealed up the sending unit with a shallow metal peanut can and duct tape to "run a test" to see if that was leaking fumes....still stinks with the can in place....I've poked around underneath as best I can to see if there are any leaks....Obviously I can't see in back underneath completely without removing the whole tank...I'm just wondering if I need to remove it and locate the tank elsewhere....I hate to do it because I know it's going to be a big job. How many of you guys are still running around with the tank in the cab...in it's original location? Is it the nature of the beast? Does it have to be relocated to get rid of this gas stench or do I have a tiny leak somewhere where i can't see it?? There is absolutely no evidence of a leak anywhere, yet I have this nasty gas fume problem!! Please help with any advice whatsoever. I do not have a cardboard/carpet cover for the tank...Is that part of the problem?? Thanks, Bob

I am running in cab tanks in all my trucks, and none of them have a gas smell. I have seen them leak fumes around the sending unit. I have also had to reseal a few filler necks, but when everything is sealed up, you don't smell it unless you take a hard left turn with the windows down. Even then, it only lasts a few seconds, and it is a tradeoff I'll make to keep from installing a Blazer tank or an ill fitting fuel cell and ruining a bedside or floor with a filler. I actually like the look of the filler on cab (mainly because we'll never see that again on new trucks) and I don't like looks of a fuel tank hanging down in the rear. JMO

I use the stock tank in my 70. Other than the occasional wiff around the vented cap I don't have any smell either. Even when it does happen it's only for a few seconds. Good luck finding your source.

I still have the in cab tank in mine, I did put a new filler neck cover and a new cap. It does not smell at all inside the cab ever. I dont drive my truck every day either as it is mostly driven to car shows and cruises so if it smells I would notice right of way, so far so good. Take the tank out and have it pressure tested and check the fuel sending unit would be my fisrt choices.

i have a vented in cab tank and i have it hooked up to my 5.3L. get a lil gas smell but nothing that makes me sick or anything. maybe i should try and seal the sending unit hole better.

I was smelling gas pretty bas one in my ;67 C-30 ramp truck, and it ws the sending unit. I put bead of Right Stuff silicone sealant around the sem and I've never smelled it again. That was about 6 yrs ago, and it has held up great.

Both of my trucks still have tanks in the cab and the only time I have a gasoline smell is like the others.

It is not super hard to take the tank out if it is empty, but I think it works best if you have two people, especially when working the tank neck out of the rubber piece on the side of the truck.

Some times the seat belts have to be removed where they bolt to the floor close to the bottom of the tank.

I'm running stock tank inside of cab as well on a daily driver. The only time I smell fuel is right after I fill it up and on an occasion with the windows down. However when I get home from work, my wife tells me I smell like truck..lol

Stock tank here... too much trouble to move it outbound, and keep it looking nice while being accessible.

68 GMC and 69 Chevy both with tank in the cab. Occasional smell of fumes in the summer time but nothing that is offensive.

After seeing some trucks with the tanks in the back, I have decided to keep it in the stock location. Like some others, I like the stock look.

If I do decide to change in the future, I'll probably go with a smaller tank that's not too bulky. Something like a 16 gallon one.

Hope mine looks that good, when I get one of those "round-tuit" things.

The day i bought my truck i noticed a strong oder of fuel. I started checking around and found a tiny hole under the tank,sealed it up with some JB Weld,smell went away for good.

odds are, it is around the filler neck. I have seen quite a few leak from there, and the best that I can tell, it's from being lazy and leaning on the pump nozzle when filling up.

I would check you filler neck and take a flash light and see if you have any running done on the inside of the cab. They are not hard to pull. What condition are the lines in....dry rot, splitting

Does the metal crack where the neck meets the tank?

yep. It's actually brazed on, and that's what cracks.

The in cab tank is one of the few original items that I have that hasn't rusted into oblivion here in the rust belt.

I will never move it for that simple fact alone...

well my first tank that went inside the cab had a Good Seal on all the lines coming out and a vented gas cap...

so next step was to take the tank out...

Hooked up with the air compressor aand a Squirt bottle andfilled with soapy water (at least it was gonna get clean) PROBLEM SOLVEED!

What had looked like surface rust was where i guess water inside my tank had ate thru the metal and "perforated" my tank back where you would never notice.. put in a new tank problem solved..

oh yeah sometimes i still get a whiff but the tanks in the cab and me and my truck both arent perfect so we deal with it.
