GM experts needed

Hey all, I'm learning how to reference the casting numbers found on my engine to Mortec's website. As of right now I am only able to get the head casting #'s and the Engine code. According to Mortec's site this is what I have for heads........33417369...90-up...350..........Gen.I Goodwrench crate motor,"Hecho en Mexico", 76cc

I have yet to pull the motor out of my truck so I have no block casting numbers. I do however have the engine code found on the passenger side front of the block on a pad as follows, 2m0102 7vp.

This motor was bought as a crate motor and I have done nothing to it. By the info provided can anyone tell me what I may have, ie. JUNK, MEDIOCRE, or a nice foundation for a mild or wild build. I'm just curious.

According to the head #'s and your saying it was a crate motor, then I'd guess it was a crate 350. Simple enough, right?? Now if you are going to rebuild it, then it is a s good as any other core and in fact the Hencho blocks are rumored to have a higher nickel/iron content (stronger block) but not a big enough deal to get excited about. Again as a builder, it is good, get some quality parts (pistons {pop-up} if you want to increase your compression as those heads are "BIG" cc chambers and a compression ratio of maybe 7.5-8:1 as is, and 9:1 would help performance, ARP bolts, etc).

Vortec heads would be a great addition to that shortblock and would keep you from having to use a pop-up type piston as the Vortec has a 64 cc chamber.

I am going to guess it is a 2002 target master??? (as this number 2m0102 7vp breaks down to: M= mexico, where it was cast, 0102 is 01 (first month=January, 02 is the year 2002??), equivelant to the 260 crate motor?? I believe they are still casting the GEN I motors in Mexico today, but the casting number will settle it for 100% sure.


BTW it is a 4-bolt main block so the shortblock is a good piece, just ditch the heads for a new set of Vortecs for about $600 (almost what a good machine shop will charge for a valve job, valve guides, etc, etc) and you'll have a way better head than those 76 cc smog type heads.

Thanks for the input 70rs/ss. This engine was built earlier than 2002 I know for sure because I bought in 1997. So your opinion would be to ditch the heads if I were to build it up. As of right now I run a Edelbrock Performer RPM dual plane intake, and Edlebrock 600 electric choke carb. The rest is stock. I'm not really looking to rebuild the motor but was just curious as to what I have and what I could do with it.

A head swap to the 96 and up Vortecs would be a near night and day difference, as well as a cam upgrade and you'll think you have a BBC under there!! The target motors are decent motors, but comp is low (think 7-8:1) and the cams are tiny. A good set of heads, bifgger cam and WOW!! Good Luck!!!


BTW did you get a differnet/better casting number off of the rear of the block?? The casting date will be on the bellhousing flange near the casting number to be 100% what year and exact motor you have as well.

70rs/ss, Again I thank you for your feedback. Please let me pick your brain some more. First,I haven't cleaned nor pulled the engine to get a better look at the block cating numbers, I just know for sure that it is pre2002 as you stated earlier. As far as my setup I had mentioned with the intake and carb combo, using the 96-up Vortec heads wouldn't I need to redrill the center two bolt holes on each side of the intake to a 90 degree angle to match the holes in the heads, where as my bolt holes are at an angle on the earlier model heads? Will this create a intake leakage problem?

Also, I had been thinking of upgrading the cam ever so slightly, what would you recommend for the package stated above.......stock Targetmaster block and internals, Vortec heads, Edelbrock RPm Performer intake, and Edelbrock 600 cfm electric choke carb?

Sorry to be so inquisitive.

Come on a BBC?

Seriously, it does make a night and day difference between the stock 265HP form and a mild hyd cam and Vortec heads (both for flow and compression reasons). I'd say 325HP is a safe bet.

C'mon have you driven a bone stock target master?? My 90 454 has like 290 hp stock!! I know, I know maybe not 500hp BBC power but a good upgrade, none the less!!

As for the intake, just buy a vortec intake $150 ish and you know it'll work without issue. A good cam around 460-470 lift would be good, give Comp Cams, Cam Help a call and they can help you select a cam for the upgrades that'll work and not be too big for your app.

Nothing wrong with a bone stock 350, but a couple of perf upgrades will be noticed when compared to said bone stock 350.
