2001 4.3 engine surge?
I just bought a 2001 Sportside with 6 cyl and manual transmission. I find that after running under a load load like climbing a grade, when letting off the gas a bit, the engine surges, which at first felt like it was cutting out. Otherwise the engine idles fine and seems to run ok.
Has anyone seen this problem? Thanks, Steve 91Sportside |

How many miles are on the truck?
I would run it buy some place and hook a code reader to it and see if it throws any codes at you. Might just be a sensor. The 4.3 in my 2002 is hooked to an autonatic, and I sometimes feel what is a surge, but I am not sure if it the automatic(Pretty sure it is) or something else.

Thats one thats hard to say without being able to drive it myself. Could be a multitude of things if it doesn't turn out being normal. I'd get the codes pulled and keep an eye on it acting funny.

Re: 2001 4.3 engine surge?
It turns out that it was an intermittent cam sensor. I still feel something like a slight miss, probably a partially clogged injector. I have put some injector cleaner in the tank so will keep an eye on it.
The truck is much different from my 91. At 55 it is running only 1400 rpm, the 91 is at 1900 for the same speed. This means I need to downshift more as the engine runs out of power sooner. I guess the bigger wheels coupled with a lower differential ratio makes all the difference. |
