Help Please starter problem...
Well today me and a friend changed the clutch in my 71 6cyl. 3 speed truck....It had a 10 inch clutch and we put a 11 inch clutch in it...We used another flywheel that was out of a 72 with a 6 cyl....They both had the same tooth count....Well my starter is grinding bad and has that whine when starting...It starts and runs fine...Its just real loud and grinds when starting....And you can't shim the 6 cyl three bolt starters....

Re: Help Please starter problem...
Questions: Other than flywheel, clutch and pressure plate was anything else changed? Also, did you notice any grinding before you swapped flywheels?
I did the opposite on my 69 many years ago. I went from a heavy duty 11" to a light duty 10" and swapped the flywheel. (I didn't need the heavy clutch.) I didn't have any problems with starter grinding. Only thing I can figure is that you may have a defective flywheel... |

Re: Help Please starter problem...
My son was having the same problem with a starter, after he put a new one in the problem went away.
It sounds like there is a problem with the starter drive. I was wondering why you changed from a 10" clutch to a 11" clutch. I have a '78 250 l6 in my '67 with a 10" clutch and it works great. Danny
