Stupid PO customizations!

I know we all love to see pics of stupid things that POs have done so here we go. I am a little embarrassed to show this because I am just now getting around to correcting it but oh well. When I bought my blazer about 2 years ago. I noticed that it had a rather questionable lift on the rear axle. I purchased new lift springs a few months ago but haven’t really had the time to change them out (haven’t really had time to drive it either for that matter). Yesterday I finally got around to tearing things down so I thought I would take a few pics. Honestly it wasn’t as unsafe as I thought. The lift blocks (aka cut up leaf springs) have a long bolt going all the way through them and sticking out the top. Also, the very bottom is tack welded to the spring perch. Anyway, I pretty much got it all removed last night, gonna clean/paint the axle as soon as the rain stops and reinstall it using the new lift springs and a new set of heavy duty shackles that I got from DIY4x4. Then I won’t be so nervous when I do those 4 wheel burnouts!

My favorite part is how they installed the 2 degree shim at the TOP of the “block” instead of the bottom!

That's AWESOME! You are the first person to mention my avatar! I thought maybe nobody was familiar with the show. I guess now is a perfect time to tell you that I own a Banjo and can play the beginning part to the whole dueling banjos thing from Deliverance. HAHA! I'M NOT EVEN KIDDING! It's mostly just for a joke though, I'm not really that much of a Redneck...am I?

Re: Stupid PO customizations!

Yeah, I remember the 1st time I saw the "backwoods" lift kit too. Wow! But, at least it's running I thought to myself. I'm still a ways away from that. Glad to see you've been able to work on the old Critter. I'm interested in the shackle reverse kit from diy4x4. What exactly does it do. What are the benefits?

Keep in mind I didn’t get a shackle REVERSAL kit, I just bought some new heavier duty factory style shackles that will replace the worn out ones (technically they could be used in a shackle reversal kit, but you would still need the different mounts). I’m terrible at explaining things; you are probably better just reading/looking at these pages.

Here's what a DIY4X Shackle Flip does....it makes a whole lotta sense when you see it. If you look close at the cab mount right above the flip, you can see the "body lift" I was talking about earlier.

Re: Stupid PO customizations!

i would say the PO had some RedNeck ingenuity for sureill score him a 7. 10 being stacked 2x4s. never been a fan of blocks just for all the obvious reasons.

AJs.. thats bad but i have seen 2x3inch P.A. bodylifts stacked on a nissan by a guy back in highschool. that was a cake taker.

Re: Stupid PO customizations!

In my defense, at least I’m only lazy and not stupid. Stupid put the “blocks” in place…lazy is just now removing them.

Re: Stupid PO customizations!

Since ur online right now, did you get ur tranny rebuild kit at Autozone? I think it's an ATC kit for about $154.00. Josh told me that you would need at least a couple of weeks if not a month to do the rebuild. Just wanted to see what your plans were in the next couple of weeks. If you're still up gimme a call on my cell. Later, Mario

Re: Stupid PO customizations!

Yeah it was pretty unsafe. I only drove it around here and there when I felt I "had to" and that was normaly no more than 40 MPH. You could feel a lot of sway in the rear end under heavy throttle!

No problem, you want me to give them to you so you can put them on the front?

Crazy, yes, but not even close to the craziest thing I've seen. Glad you're making it right.

he he he
back in school when we were young dumb and broke
we used lawn mower rollers and cut them down for body lifts
one guy used a butt load of hockey pucks
heck he had to have had more in hockey pucks than a body lift
