Another dissapointment

Went and looked at a 70 SWB this week. This makes about the sixth one I have looked at.I have traveled 1500 miles looking at trucks in the past 30 days.Three of the trucks I have looked at I found on e-bay.I am so glad I go look before I place a bid.I would have been very unhappy if I had won any of these trucks.I thought I could get a better truck than what I am finding in the 10 grand range. Most of the ones that I have looked at have rust starting to develop or rust spots that have been poorly repaired.Am I expecting to much? I am hoping to find a SWB or stepside(preferred) small block with AT,PS,PB and possibly air but not a must.Well thanks for listening to my rant,I will keep searching.

Re: Another dissapointment

I don't want to bust your bubble, but finding one of these trucks without any rust or even minimal rust is going to be like finding the needle in a haystack.

Yeah, there may be some, but you're not going to be in the price range you cited. What we may percieve to be a rust-free truck, will have some that is not visible. There are places on these trucks that will rust unless they are kept in a controlled environment. Down inside the plenum; behind the kick panels; cab corners; rockers; cab mounts; inside of doors; bottoms of door posts behind the fenders; bottom corners of fenders; under the battery on the splash panel; firewalls where they extend under the cab; behind the heater/ac blower motor; the list goes on and on.

I thought my truck was in good shape. I knew it needed floor pans and rockers and kick panels and a little work inside the cab at the rear corners. What I didn't know, and didn't see/suspect, was the amount of rust and where it manifests itself within the plenum. You'd be amazed. What you can see that is rusted is a piece of cake, in most cases, because you know where it is. Be thankful for that "piece of mind".

If you intend to buy one, be aware of the hidden areas. Take a magnet with you that is designed to ferret out the bondo jobs that may make you think it's straight. The current owner may not even have a clue. If it is in primer, be aware that the primer can be sprayed over a multitude of sins of the bodywork sort, tricking you into thinking all is good.

What you may want to consider it buying an unfinished project that someone has become disinterested in. Frequently, those deals can be had for way less money than it took to get it to the point that it is at when you look at it. Don't discount looking at those, too.

Good luck.

Re: Another dissapointment

You haven't said what you're looking for/price range?

Are you looking for a restored truck and finding poorly patched butcher jobs or are you looking for a "starter" and just finding rust buckets?

That 71 is an excellent deal. I know it is a longbed, but that truck is sweet.

Re: Another dissapointment

I say look for an $8000 truck in southern cali, arizona, nevada.... you get the picture.
You can spend the other 2000 bucks flying out and driving it home, or putting it on a transporter and letting a trucker drag it here for you.
You already know about the trucks in our area... they suck for the best part.

Re: Another dissapointment

OHIO SUCKS!!! Everything has rust here!

My burb has had some minor rust repairs in the past - it originally came from Cali. My Jimmy has had the rockers replaced and the kick panels need some work otherwise solid - it came from colorado.

Good luck.

Re: Another dissapointment

I'm an FNG here, although I've been lurking the boards for a couple weeks,so i hope I don't step out of line or give away any secrets when I say the Greenville-Spartanburg South Carolina area is loaded with these model trucks.10,000 around here will get you a near show quality truck. Check out the local classifieds here: www.iwanna.com . Look in both the classic car section and also the truck section. You can browse the ads free but the phone #"s are scrambled unless you register and pay a $1 per issue fee. I usually just look at the ads on the internet then if I see something I want to call about I pick up a newstand copy. Check the ad out on this page:
http://www.greenvilleiwanna.com/view...eels&start=140

If you see something in this area you want looked at i'd be happy to check it out for you if it's fairly close to me

Pete, I looked at that one and it's definitely not a $9K truck. Maybe $4-5K. It is repainted (poorly) and has had some rust issues covered up.

Levi72 is selling his CLEAN 1972 Super Cheyenne SWB stepside for 7000. You'd still be under 10000 with shipping and it's a very nice truck.

Where were you a month ago when I was trying to sell mine as I did not want to redo my truck?
I was bidding on one on ebay and I got up to 40k just because I wanted a show stopper and not deal with the headache of doing it my self...You could had mine for the 10k all day long....My truck has never been hit.... By the time I get done with it it will be a 20k plus machine...

Re: Another dissapointment

Finding a rust free truck for any price in the middle of the rust zone is --well--timely, costly and frustrating. Can't tell you how many times i too have taken trips up to 500 miles off e-bay and craigslist BS listings. I even had one trailered in from southern california that wound up with so many issues that it just made me really crazy. I have seen rusty trucks in New Mexico, Arizona, California, Washington, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Texas etc. A little creative body work and they all looked perfect but~~~. Reality is unless you find a survivor from a rust free area that someone you can trust confirms the condition, you are dancing in the dark. I have a relatively rust free 70 SWB, V8, Auto, Air, PS, PB truck from Arkansas that is a project under way. I has been sitting for 3 years but is solid, straight with tons of potential. It can be had for $3,200. as is or i can finish it but if I do, I wouldn't sell it!!hehehehe What is way cool on this truck is that the cab is a big block air cab (72) hung on an original short bed --with a rebuilt 350, duals, posi, and just needs the attention to get-er-done. You can pick the color, options, etc.!!!
Good luck with your search but be careful as most owners always describe their trucks a whole lot better then reality!!! Huck in kentucky-

Re: Another dissapointment

Another thought is to deal with one of our vendors---. Frank or Wes up in Washington might be able to come up with what you want and you can trust them for an accurate description. Another thought is to offer a finders fee to motovate a board member to go out of their way to help you find that elusive rust free short stepside. Keep in mind that most stepsides were low budget trucks with minimal options and prone to farm usage where the beds took a beating. Finding an excellent stepside bed is harder to find then a fleetside bed. My opinion~~~. Huck
