FRAME HELP Please!!!
I am currently starting on my swb frame and need some help. I recently purchased a power steering box from a friend that was for a 72. I bought it to put on my 68 frame that came with manual steering. Will the box bolt right up or do I have to make an indentation in the frame. I don't have the steering box with me and the frame is at my other friends shop getting a c-notch and i wanted to get this issue taken care of if there is one. All help is appreciated thanks.

Re: FRAME HELP Please!!!
IF your frame has the raised pads under your current steering box then it will. If it doesn't then you can buy a 60-66 conversion kit for the frame or beat a large dimple into it. I'm gonna buy the $80 spacer kit myself since my frame is flat...

Re: FRAME HELP Please!!!
most 67's were flat, and some 68s were flat too.
I don't recomend the spacer, but I get flamed with all the "it worked for me" guys so i won't bother explaining. |

Re: FRAME HELP Please!!!
4WD boxes are the same except that the pitman arm moves fore and aft not left and right...

Re: FRAME HELP Please!!!
Longhorn Man,
Since I'm curious.... what is your objection to a spacer? Is it the leverage on the bolts caused by the steering forces (similar to the forces on a body lift)? msgross, The sector shaft is different on the 2wd vs. 4wd boxes too I think.

Re: FRAME HELP Please!!!
there is added leverage, yes. This can cause the frame to crack, or broken mounting bolts. However, it is uncommon.
The real reason, it throws the steering off center. You can't center the steering properly. And, on the work gear, the center is hardened moreso than the 'turning' part of the gear. This can cause premature wear, and added slop in the steering. |
