Went from 86' to 79'

Sold my 86' swb 305 Friday and picked up this 79' w/ a rebulit 350 w/ a mild cam and rebuilt turbo 350 tranny both w/ plenty of warantee left and new paint and new interior for the same price as what I sold my shoty for. What y'all think, good deal? The black one would have had to have a paint job ASAP and needed some interior and it was short on power.The new one will suit my needs way better. I picked up THE 79' and made a 110 mile highway trip doing 85 w/ the air condition full blast and got a hiar over 13 mph. The ride was very comfortable w/ them seats,new carpet and headliner, aslo has a decent stereo.

I will ask him what they came out of, I do know they where recently re-upholstered and very comfortable w/ lumbar support. Also it has a smooth,sweet uncracked dash. As soon as I find out I will post it.

I think you did well. Shorties can bring more then long beds but a long bed can out haul a shorty. I have always been partial to the long beds for there use as a truck and they seem to ride a bit nicer from the factory. That 86 looked pretty clean in the pictures tho. I am not sure what you plans are or what you use these for but that 350 should make things a bit more fun.

Some trucks definitely look righteous with a toolbox, and yours is one of them. Is it a 3/4 ton 2wd? The colors are classy too. Nice swap!

OK, I found out about the seats....now forgive me in advance, but they came from a F*** f-350...


" The 79 is a c20 correct? " Man y'all may have to educate me on that, title says 1/2 ton but he put 3/4 ton suspention on it...So as a 1/2 ton would it have been a c-10 ?

Now what would have been a fair Tx price on this truck?

10=1/2
20= 3/4
30=1 ton

so I would call it a 1979 c-20 but it sounds like it was originally a 1979 c-10

regardless it is one sweet truck. Do you know why he converted? bigger and better rear end maybe? towing ?

I am not sure on TX truck values but i would say around 3500 and up

That is a very nice ’79. I would love to put a seat of seats like that in my ’78.

Not too sure about that grill through. It looks like an aftermarket grill w/o the bowtie that someone added a bowtie to.

i love both the old and new.. being partial to long beds i too prefer the longbed .. you asked for guesses what you sold/ picked up the new one for im guessing $3500 or thereabouts, they are both gorgeous trucks in the pics

Just went and checked, it is leather/pleather...same material as the seat,I will take more pics this weekend.

84 400,yep I agree I was lucky as so far he has been srtaight w/ me and helpfull w/ me bothering him w/ calls etc lol

Tommorow I will put the starter on and the chrome rain drip rails ? around the top of the doors ( he sent me w/ 2 new sets) .

Only other thing and I knew up front was the gas gauge does not work nor the selector switch, the dude says it is a part/module type that goes on the frame rail near the cab and it will solve the gauge and selector prob. he is ggoing to get me the part number etc. so hopefully I can get it on tommorow as well. I have read and searched this problem here and never heard of this part, most say the sending unit....what do y'all know of this part?

Now my 79 is a half but it's a heavy half. Is the 4th number in the Vin a 4? If so it's a C15 and a heavy half.

i believe you are referring to the fuel tank selector valve
(if it is the stock valve, it does nothing for the fuel gauge, it is ran through the switch on the dash. the switch changes which sender goes to the gauge, I have heard of disassembling the switch and cleaning the contacts)
there are 2 different tank selector valves, one is a 3 port (trucks without return lines) and the other is a 6 port (trucks with return lines)
GM part number for my '80 with return lines is #467513 price $137.27
as far as I know GM is the only place you can get the factory style 6 port. there are universal valves out there but, if i understand correctly, you have to re-wire the selector switch and sender wires.
there is a factory style, after-market 3 port valve out there. I will have to look for the link

Thanks Joe, I have yet to find one...looked all weekend, tried all the local scrap spots and the truck I keep an eye on in folks yards ha ha . I also have a friend checking through the dealership. This weekend it died on me ...no fire looks like it is the ignition module in the distributor (brand new msd srteet fire hei) People tell me that it is not uncommon for this part to fail ????
I am picking one up tommorow, I have 12 v to the dizzy so hopefully the ignition module it the prob.


79gmcsierragrande, The vin shows it to be originally a 1/2 ton, no 4 for the 4th number,also originally had a 454.

NOOOPE U AINT THE ONLY ONE. I LIKED THE 86 A WHOLE LOT MORE. THE 79 IS OK THOUGH. I AM A 81-87 SHORTIE GUY THOUGH. SO WHAT U PLAN ON DOING TO THE 79?
