Re: who has a camper for there truck

old girl looks good huh. got several thumbs up on the drive over, as well as people stopping by and asking about the truck. was rather cool.

truck did well on the highway, 65mph on the way over on the high way, and around 60 on the way back on the smaller highway.

looks like i only got about 8 mpg..ouch. but for what im guessing was 2250 pounds or so extra weight she did well.

down side, i think the top of one stake pocket got dented in a bit..grrrrrrrrr, im not wanting to look.. #@$@#^#$%&&$@#$^ oh well.

Re: who has a camper for there truck

Believe it or not,the whole time I had my camper (and the owner before me since new) it was bolted through the floor with four bolts.I had pieces of plate to span the wood a bit,but that was it.I always wanted to get the pieces that bolt into the stake pockets and they got hooked into the camper.
Mine rode nic wit the camper mounted and it felt like it wasn`t there.I`d have to remind myself I had this huge box on the back and over top.It wasn`t hard to forget when I looked in my mirrors, though.I didn`t notice a big drop in mileage when hauling it.I`d usually roll along at 65-70.I liked hearing the exhaust through the crank-out windows and the opening into the cab.
I really miss that thing and know I took it for granted when I decided to part it out rather than restore.I was planning on picking up a Four Wheel Camper for my 4wd GMC to take it`s place.Hasn`t happened yet and doesn`t look like anytime soon.It sure is great having a classy get away machine in waiting for when the chance arrives. That`s real livin`right there!

Re: who has a camper for there truck

Hello Dave,
Mine is a camper shell. I use C clamps to fasten it. Some day I will have a camper for it. They are all around here in the desert.

Re: who has a camper for there truck

That is a nice setup you have there, MTDave2! You have succeeded in making me kick myself in the a$$ for selling the 10' 1971 Conestoga cabover in this old pic.

The tie downs were the brackets that you drop into the stake pockets and expand with an allen wrench, then hook turnbuckles from them to the eyebolts on the camper. I got around 8 mpg at 65 mph.

Around '92 I took a crappy pic of my son and the 2 chicks he was chasin' at the time and it accidently got in the background. He is now 6'7" and 22 years old. Can't find a picture of just the rig. I sold the camper in '97 after having it 10 years as it was just getting too tight for us, but still have the truck so there is still a chance to do it again without kids!

I agree there has to be a lot of slide in camper types out there!

None of these are mine so can't help with any of your questions at all really! Some cool period shots though. Some of these are members, or family members.

Re: who has a camper for there truck

I saw this one going down the road today! A true survivor too
It was a 71 or 72 and in good shape body wise, looked to be completely original. Even had the spare tire mounted on the front bumper. You should have seen the old man driving it; I'd bet money he bought it new.
It fun to see this original stuff still cruising!
