steering column difference's ?
I'm switching out a 3 speed manual column for an auto but the gear shift lever is missing.I want to buy a new one but I'm not sure what year my auto column is , and in the l.m.c catologe there are different part numbers for different years. So is there a way to tell what year it is?

Re: steering column difference's ?
Well the steering wheel and shaft next to the column. Looks like 67-68 the column should be 69-72.
Andy whats the difference betweeen 69-70 71-72 columns? I didn't know there was any difference. I mean I know that later model columns are th350 or 3 speed and earlier ones were PG or 2 speed. Fubar, you will need the intermediate shaft to use the newer column... |

Re: steering column difference's ?
I did the three on the tree to tilt/700r4 recently. The column I got was from a 27 truck. It bolted right in. I have a question when did Chevy do colapsable columns in our trucks? My 67 Chevelle had a colapsable column. first year for those.

Re: steering column difference's ?
one more question, I need the gear indicator too, and the only reproduction I can find (for a non tilt) is for 71-72. So does anybody make a different one or will that one work?

Re: steering column difference's ?
that intermidiate shaft is colapsable... makes it a late 68 - 72.
the wheel is obviously 67/68 the column is probably a 69/70 due to the shift indacator (perndle). The 71/72 were tall and plastic, the 67 - 70 were short and pot metal. ASSUMING the shaft, is from that column, then it is more likely than not, a 69/70 since not a whole lot of 68s were auto, or had the colapsable shaft. the TH400 was avalible in 67 - 72... so a 3 speed perndle says nothing on the year. The powerglide was avalible at least till 71, possibly 72, so a 2 speed perndle says nothing about the year either. |

Re: steering column difference's ?
The spokes on the wheel look to be the same color as my 50th Anniversary

Re: steering column difference's ?
It looks identical to my 72 I just rebuilt except the indicator on mine was a taller plastic one. I think the difference in the shift handle is the steering wheel you use.

Re: steering column difference's ?
Thanks for all the help, I ended up ordering a shifter for 69/70 so I'll see if it fits. The steering wheel in the pic is the original one, but the one that came with the column is the same style just blue. the original one is saddle brown.
